Start watching Craigs list http://seattle.craigslist.org/pho/

but for your neck of the woods. Just be careful and do all transactions in a public place.

You can pick up a new one at Wall Mart or Sears for about $20.00

In my experience, the cheap tripods with plastic parts break at the most inopportune times. This is one case where paying a bit more up front for a good used one makes a lot more sense than buying a cheaply made one that you will have to replace. I found a Manfrotto at a photo studio that was closing down. It is a beast, but will last my life time. $75 well spent.

Remember that a light and cheap tripod will only make you happy once, if that!

Check out the good ones at a store ( especially the head ) then decide
