The image is badly out of focus. Try to find why the auto function did not function right at 1/180 sec shutter speed this is not a IS system problem.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I thought Canon lenses are able to detect if they are tripod mounted when IS is turned on.

OK, you are wrong. ;-)

SOME lenses by almost every manufacturer are capable of "tripod aware" mode, but actually these make up a very small percentage of anyones lens inventory.

Was shooting with my 6D and 24-105 on a tripod. Several shots were excellent and then, all of a sudden, this happened. I know something is amiss, but the only thing I can figure is that I left the stabilizer on while using the tripod. Error on my part. Looks as though the lens just stopped focusing. Any other suggestions would be appreciated.

You should NEVER leave your image stabilizer when using a tripod.

8-) 8-) 8-) The EF300mm f/2.8l IS USM has the ability to detect a tripod mount situation and work accordingly. There might be at least one other, but don't let that influence your opinion.

Call me and Old Fart... BUT...

I would not really trust anything that is so-called "Automatic".

I would agree with MT Shooter, I leave my IS on all the time whether shooting handheld, or on the tripod, never been an issue. If there is no camera shake, the IS does nothing. I would check the auto-focus of the lens before blaming the IS.

I guess I'm lucky to own 2 lenses that detect tripod mounting the 500 F4 and the 70-200 2.8 II. That is, if the information I sourced is correct.

Sometimes when this happens to me, it turns out that Some Idiot (who will remain nameless to avoid embarrassing me) has accidentally switched the camera into manual focus but is still relying on auto focus to give him the correct picture. This is sometimes referred to euphemistically as "user error."

Image Stabilization was NOT the culprit here. Making a blanket statement that Image Stabilization must always be turned off when tripod mounted is NOT TRUE. Most CANON lenses with IS are tripod aware. Only 4 of their older designs are not and as they are replaced with newer versions, they will be tripod aware.

Canon even recommends using IS with long lenses when outdoors in a breezy environment!

Here is a link to a page with a list of Canon lenses with IS and which are tripod aware and which are not: http://cpn.canon-europe.com/content/education/infobank/lenses/image_stabilisation.do?page=4
