Last year, we watched a pair of Red Tail Hawks nest high up in a tree in our yard in Williamsburg, Virginia. We were treated to observing these two youngsters mature. Like most juveniles, they were very curious, and interested in exploring their territory.

Love them, MDI Mainer! They look like they're having a conversation in the first one!
One thing about their maturation sticks in my mind.
From when they fledged, they were very interested in the squirrels who shared their territory.
At first, if they came too close, the squirrels would challenge the young hawks, who would fly away.
But one day that strategy no longer worked for their first squirrel victim. After that, the squirrels became as wary of the youngsters as they were of the parents.
