Greetings all you photo geeks. I hope you are warmer then me. It's cold here in Colorado. I have been trying to set up my Canon flashes to perform as a slave setup. I want to use a Canon 420 EX as my main and a 580II as a slave but I can't get it to work. H E L P!
The 420 cannot operate as a master. It can only work as an on camera stand alone or as a slave.
The 580 has to be the master.
If you have a 7D, the pop up flash can work as the master but you don't indicate what model camera you are working with.

Do you know if the 70D can also use the built-in flash as the master? I am using a Canon 600EX speedlite. Thanks

Yes, the pop-up on the 70D can be used as a wireless commander.
Go out there and get creative!
You can make the move from capturing images to creating them.
If you haven't already done so, check out the Strobist website:
http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/02/welcome-to-strobist.htmlThey have a Lighting 101 section -off on the right side of the page, but here is the link:
http://strobist.blogspot.com/2006/03/lighting-101.htmledit: I found this elsewhere on DP Review---
"On your camera:
1.Pop-up your flash.
2.Go to your "Flash Control" Menu, either by the Menu button or by tapping Q then the flash icon on your LCD.
3.Set the Wireless Function to "Easy Wireless." (If you went the Q menu route, it should be the middle icon of three.)
On your flash:
1.Press the left-most "lightning bolt" button over and over until you see: a lightning bolt icon in the upper-right corner (this is the optical icon; the radio icon is a radio tower for the 600 RF) AND you see the word "slave" near the center of the flash LCD. (Only this icon combination sets your flash to "optical slave." )
2.Position your flash how you like, but make sure the that camera and the remote flash can "see" each other. (This is to ensure that the remote flash receives the infrared signals coming from your pop-up flash. Note that distance can be a factor in signal strength.)"
I will be using a Canon 7D and I want to use a remote flash with an umbrella. I tried using the pop up flash but it has a pre-flash for red eye that triggers the remote flash...I am so confused. I have a 580 EXII I can use but don't understand. Thanks for all your help in advance.

Honestly, the easiest way to tame any Canon speedlight system is to just get a pair of triggers and be done with it.
Cheap: cowboy studios or Yongnuo's for $25.00 for a receiver and transmitter.
Better: Paul C Buff Cyber syncs - $130.00 for a receiver and transmitter.
You never have these hassles, you can change cameras and speedlights at will...and it's all compatible.

Thank you for your reply. It works! I thought there was a way.
I finally got it figured out. Gonna use the 7D and pop-up flash to trigger the 580EXii...tried it out and it works like a champ...thanks for all the help

Then turn OFF the red-eye pre-flash!
Did that and it works fine...thanks.
I have used the exact same setup as you have:
7D pop up as the master
580 EXII as slave
420 EX as slave.
You can also set the pop up flash to "not contribute to the exposure" - the flash will "fire" but only to set off the other flashes - the rest of the light will only come from the slave units.
You can also set up the two flashes in different groups - "A" and "B" and then work with different ratios right from your 7D.
I've since added a 600 EX-RT to use as the master flash because I was shooting hockey player shots on ice and the pop up flash was overheating and slowing me down. This system can work under most conditions.
I do have radio triggers on my "wish list" but for now this arrangement has worked for me without issues.
Get out and have some fun shooting. Try different ratios and set ups.

You can't do that. The 420 has to be the slave and the 580 the master.
