I see my Family...

THE FABULOUS FOUR! Our family of four black Labrador Retrievers. All are from the Guide Dog Foundation for The Blind, One of them is now back in New York learning to be a Guide Dog. The others are retired and thankfully are our family. The fun part of taking the picture was to keep them all still until my husband stopped shaking to cookie jar!

An interview with PW4GDF,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I got started when I was living in England and worked in a store that sold cameras. Since my teens and I am way past that! I loved to take pictures and had a little darkroom

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I did attend some classes at our local community college, I mostly take pictures of animals, pets, nature, wildlife. No weddings!

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
I knew I only had these four lovely dogs at my house for a couple of days and as they are all so special. They have been, and will be, future Guide Dogs it was an honor and pleasure to have them all.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
The set up was a yellow comforter to match the walls on my porch, making sure the sun was in the right place then just clicked away with my Nikon D40.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
No they are all perfect.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
I do plenty of other things in my so called retirement and I manage to work in taking photographs where ever I go. I always have a camera or two with me. Not a cell phone camera! I take pictures constantly of my puppies in training, I do not see in the future (hopefully)where I would not be able to do photography. Goodness that is a hard question, probably more craft and art projects.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
If you want to look at my many hard drives as that is where most of my pictures are, no displays or exhibitions, no website. If you receive one of my Christmas projects you can see some, that's about it!

An interview with lowkick,

1) How long have you been into photography and what got you started?
I have loved photography since I was a kid and my first camera was probably a Kodak Brownie from around 1956. I never had the right combination of time and money to actually get into it as a hobby. I did have my own dark room in the mid-70's, but never found the time to really learn and to take pictures frequently. My oldest sister was a true artist. My mother and other sister were creative with their hands. I think I have creative tendencies and a decent eye, but I can't draw a straight line with a ruler. I think I fell in love with photography when I found that it would allow me to be creative through technical means rather than needing the physical ability of an artist to translate what they see from their minds to their hands.

2) Have you had any formal training and what kind of photography do you do most?
I have never had formal training in photography, but I have done a lot of independent studying through various sources on the internet like Lynda.com, read books by Scott Kelby and others, bought videos from Karl Taylor and others, etc. I don't think I have found a specific niche for my photography yet, but I like taking shots of smaller aspects of a larger picture. Like the mother and baby holding hands, the larger picture would have shown the mother with the baby and would have been perfect for showing in an album or on the mantle to memorialize them. But by showing just their hands conveyed the emotion without having to see or know anything else about them. With some photos the goal is not showing an emotion, but bringing to light an interesting or artistic detail that is lost in the bigger picture.

3) What inspired you to take your winning shot?
My inspiration for this photo was my daughter holding my first grandchild's hand. I was watching them and felt the emotion, but as I scanned the details of the scene I could feel my emotions stirring more as my eyes rolled over their clasped hands.

4) What equipment did you use and was there any special setup?
I used a Canon 6D camera with a Canon EF 100mm f.2.8L lens. The lighting was natural sunlight through a glass door. Shot at 1/800 of a second at f2.8, ISO 1000, aperture priority, evaluative metering.

5) Would you change anything if you could do it again?
I don't think I would have changed much even if I had the time to set the shot up. I would have probably lowered the ISO as much as possible, but the picture was happening, the camera was set at ISO1000 and I didn't want to miss the shot. Also, perhaps using a reflector to add a touch more light to the shadowy areas of the hands would have been nice, but I was able to do that in PP.

6) If you couldn't do photography what else would you do?
If I couldn't do photography as a hobby I don't know what else I would do. Photography is already something I'm doing instead of other things I can no longer do, or no longer wish to do. And it is something I have always done, wanted to do more of, and wanted to learn to do better.

7) Is there somewhere we can see more of your work?
I have a small, but slowly growing gallery on Zenfolio that you can access by going to http://www.TheIsaacBerGallery.com . Isaac Ber is my Hebrew name. Isaac (Yitzhak) means "he who laughs" and Ber (pronounced "bear" means, literally, a bear. Taking generous liberties with the Hebrew language, Isaac Ber translates out to Laughing Bear. That name captures my personality and physical presence and, therefore, I decided to use it for my "new start" in life as an aspiring photographer.
