There is a peahen that lives in the arroyo behind my house. She has been there for at least 5 years, all by herself. No one knows how she got there and why she stays. We've called many institutions to see if they would trap her and release her in an appropriate area but have had no luck.
In the meantime, she honks, screeches, clacks and all the other noises peacocks and peahens make. She is not afraid of people OR dogs. My dogs were barking frantically and the peahen sat on the fence and did not seem affected by all the racket.
I ran into the house to get my camera, which had the wrong lens on it for this situation, and no flash. She was not bothered by my presence either. I got about 2 feet from her. She is actually bigger than she appears in the photos, probably because I had my wide angle lens on the camera. I had to do a lot of editing to bring out the detail of the dogs because the lower part of the image was very underexposed. So these are very poor images.

That's a pretty visitor.
She is pretty but what a noisy creature!! A few months ago she began roosting in a tree in the arroyo right across from our bedroom window. She started all her racket at 3-4 in the morning!! We contacted an authority and he said spray her with water at around dusk, when they start to look for their roosting area, and she will move on. Thank goodness she did!!

I know that sound well. It's a funny noise if you can stand it. She's a beauty, but probably lonely. I wonder if someone dumped her there when they tired of her as a "lawn decoration" or she might have wandered off on her own.

Funny noise yes, but who can stand it at 3 AM!! I feel badly for her because I am sure she is lonely.

You will need to find her a mate! Really neat images, Wendy.
Decent shots under the circumstances. I'm sure she's lonely, too. You could, lol, always find a friend for her. I'm sure there are plenty of single peacocks on eHarmony.com to choose from.

Thanks Linda! The exposure was terrible on both of them, but I wanted to save the images as a reminder of how my dogs did their best to scare the peahen....they were complete failures!

Thanks for the tip but sure don't want any more of her kind around here!!! Attached is one of the images and how it looked before I 'fixed' it!

Yeah, that's much too early to be "serenaded" by a bird.
have you tried to call the zoo..or even the county animal rescue? there must be a colony that she wandered from
I'm sure she needs to find a mate or at least a companion...

There is no zoo nearby and yes, we called the county. We called a lot of organizations, no luck.

that's awful that the county wouldn't help you..she came from somewhere..i volunteer in a shelter in florida and there is a group of peacocks living behind it..they are beautiful but noisy and a bit dirty ..my car needs to be washed each time i go there..lol..however they eat dry dog food..if you keep her fed and safe maybe another mate may show up..wishing you luck..

I agree! Some one that lived nearby used to feed her, but they moved. There must be plenty to eat, because she seems quite content, other than the noise she makes early in the morning and at dusk.
