Crop sensor lens math

I am using a D3100 which is a crop sensor camera. So if I was to use a 50mm prime on it I would be essentially be shooting with a 75mm? If i understand this correctly it would be 50 x 1.5(for crop factor, I know it's acually 1.6) and that would be like 75mm(or so)?
So if I actually want 50mm focal length, then I'd need to get a 35mm?

The crop factor for DX format (Nikon) is 1.5x.
The crop factor for APS-C Cannon sensors is 1.6x, because it is slightly smaller than a Nikon APS-C sensor.

When you view through a Nikon 35-mm film camera, a 50-mm lens is considered "normal" (neither wide angle nor short telephoto). The same lens on a Nikon DX format DSLR, will cause the view, and captured image, to be most similar to a 75-mm on a film camera. The 50-mm becomes a short telephoto on a DX format camera.
