Hi All,
Hoping you can help me, I have had my D5100 for a few months used my 16GB card in it no problem, I came across another make of 16 GB card in my drawer, which had photo's on, it worked in computer fine, I deleted the photo's , formatted the drive to its defaults, BUT when I put that card in the camera, the Nikons says there's a fault or other such message, it wont even let me get into menu to format it for the D5100, which I did with the card I use everyday! I'm stumped, help please ! Graham Siamesecatmanuk

Here is a link that has the approved Nikon D5100 memory cards.
https://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/17353It may also be that the card went bad on you. The thing with memory cards is you never know when they will stop working. It's a good idea to have a few extra cards on hand. Also, you should always format cards in camera.
I shall try cleaning and let you know, thank you . Graham
I was trying the card for back up use as I take on board about them stopping working at any time,in this case it seems to be working fine on computer ,just not in camera, how can that be ? Graham

Fingerprints have an acidic oil.
Keep your fingers OFF electrical contacts as best you can.
(And off old documents. Ever see conservators wearing white gloves?)
Cleaning fluid is kinda harsh.
Isopropyl alcohol is generally recommended for that purpose.
Thanks for that info, when I said cleaning fluid, I actually meant lens cleaning fluid, so I'm guessing that was ok as it worked ? Graham

Most of those are made mostly of alcohol anyway, that's why they dissipate so fast.
Yes it was instantly gone so it must have been, the main thing I think is I couldn't see anything at all, but obviously there was grease forming a barrier, which was washed away, I was so shocked it worked, you live and learn ! ha ha Graham
If you remove and install cards a lot they will clean themselves. Pencil eraser works good for cleaning. The metal looks like copper and copper has a tendency to oxidize.
I will try the pencil eraser next time, yes it does look like copper and I should imagine the surface is tarnished without any outside contact (fingers etc. ) so I have learned something today thanks to Ugly Hedgehog Graham UK

Wall-E, this is a good point .. should the cards be cleaned regularly regardless if one is having problems with them or not?
I protect the contacts when either switching or storing them for a rest.
Just curious.
