Are these animals aggressive towards humans? Can you walk right up and snap a picture or should you use a long lens?

No, you cannot go on the beach but there is a walkway right next the beach. Even being close to the seals on the walkway, I still used my 70-300mm lens. You just wouldn't believe the number and size of these creatures.
