I bought a WD Passport 500 G for my photo backups. But do not seem to be able to get it to work on my USB 3. Any ideas, suggestions??? works fine on USB 2.

The newest versions of that drive are USB 3.0. the older ones are still for sale and are only USB 2.0. Is the plastic tab in the connector Blue? If not its only USB 2.0 compatible.

Bought it directly from WD, said it was USB 3 compatible.

I think so....it has two USB plugins that are blue and have SS by the side of one of them. I have no way of testing these to see if they are working though, as the only usb 3 device I have is the Passport drive.

Your computer has to recognize & identify a new device & set it up. Sometimes this may take several minutes. Also you computer may have set it up for a USB 2 port & won't recognize it in another port until you manually set it for a different port. Lots of unknowns as computers all act differently. Good luck

Assuming you get the connectivity issue worked out, you may want to try the automatic backup application that comes with the WD Passport. My advice is "don't". Either backup manually on some regular schedule or try some other backup software. My experience with the software packaged with the drive is that it grabs nearly all the resources on your PC and brings all other applications to a near standstill. If you google the topic you will see I'm not alone.

PS: multiple CPUs don't help - it grabs all of them!
