D7100 Autofocus Problem?

I got a D7100 several months ago as a second camera to my D300, but I had not been able to use it until recently. I am finding that the autofocus is not working properly. Comparing to identical settings with my D300, putting it on a tripod to assure the same distance, etc. - it ain't workin'! Particularly with my 80-400mm at length, the results are very soft. I have seen a number of people mentioning the same issue in various areas of the Net, but not with UHH. Anybody having similar problems?

And what ARE those settings?

The 7100 has a multitude of points available in the matrix (51).
OR you can set it for 11.
Or ONE (spot).

OR you can set dynamic AF with 51/21/9 points.

Have you tried the AF adjust? There are manufacturing tolerances, and if they fall the wrong way between the lens and body, then crisp auto focus may need help.

I set it for 11 points, and tried focusing back and forth by as much as +15 and -15. I am getting ready to try to do my own tolerance test, to see exactly where the focal point and depth of field is, at f5.6.

I too have the D7100, and I too have a question. A very basic question at that. I cannot find anywhere in my menu the setting for choosing my focus points. I have gone through the menu up and down several times. What am I missing? I seemed to have misplace my owner's manual.

Misplacing the Manual is no problem. You can download it from the NikonUSA.com Web Site. I put it on my tablet - it is easier to search electronically.

Look for the AF/MF switch on the BODY of the camera. On my D600, it's on the lower right looking at the front on the camera. There is a button in the middle of the switch. Press that while looking thru the viewfinder. Then adjust with the multi-selector. Check YouTube for a video. That's what helped me.

Thanks, but the settings did not seem to work in overcoming my issue. I used all of them. There seems to be a number of complaints for the D7000 and D7100 about back-focus problems. I also used the calibration command to attempt to correct for it, but it did not seem to do the trick, either. There are still a couple of additional things I can do, yet.

And the problem is not consistent. I have one photo that was taken from about twenty yards away, zoom lens fully extended, and the detail and focus is staggeringly good! But all pics with the same lens, essentially the same settings from farther away were all out of focus. The same conditions with my D300 were much, much better.

What lens are you doing your trials with? Is the 80~400 the old one or the new one?

When I got my D7100 I did have some soft image issues, but the AF Fine tune managed them all.

Perhaps you might consider fitting another lens for your trials.

It is the old 80-400. I will be trying newer lenses, hopefully today. (AT some point, I really gotta work a bit...) But that same lens works perfectly on my D300.

Try cleaning the contact points on the lens before mounting to the D7100 body.

Make sure that continuous focus is off.

I too, have the 7100 and I found the factory manual lacking in several topics. I bought two more manuals from the local bookstore and I found that by reading a given topic from all three, that I can piece together a pretty good understanding.

The last one I bought does a pretty good job, David Busch's NIKON D7100
