We had a new visitor and have identified it as an immature Red headed woodpecker! This is very exciting for us as they are pretty rare to see around here. In fact we have never seen one on our property. Any ideas on how to keep it interested in our feeder?

Woodpeckers really, really like suet. If you get suet cakes and a suet cage feeder and hang it up for them, you are almost sure to attract woodpeckers. Other birds enjoy the suet, too, but it's a star attraction for woodpeckers.

We do have a couple of suet feeders. But this one seemed more interested in the sunflower seeds. He/she hasn't been seen since. I sure hope it is still around. We do get several other species of woodpecker including a pair of Piliateds that have been around a long time. But the Red Headed is pretty scare around here. Thanks for the info :)

We had one of those here last year, but we only saw it one day and then it was gone. It was exciting to see it.

The red headed woodpecker was back! He was eating on and off for a couple of hours at the suet feeder today. Preparing for the nasty weather coming. Glad to see he is still hanging around :)
