New flash, but not all is good.

So the mail carrier dropped off my new flash on Friday afternoon. I ended up getting the Yongnuo 560 II. If I had it to do over again I'd have spent a bit more for the III as it can be triggered directly with a 603.

Right out of the box, I noticed how heavy it was compared to the dead Nissin 622 II. It has a higher guide number and if I set it to 1/8 power or lower I can quickly get out 7 flashes. Not that I ever shoot that fast.

This is a manual flash, which is not an issue as I almost always used my Nissin in manual mode.
My problem is that it doesn't seem to like my Yongnuo triggers;misfiring 4 out of 5 shots.
Been searching the net for the past couple of days looking for help. The only thing I have found so far is that acknowledgement that there is definitely an issue using that flash with that trigger.

Did a family portrait this past Saturday. There were 17 of us. When the triggers started failing, I had to put the flash on the camera and shoot with direct light.

I'd planned to purchase another flash when the wife is not looking, I guess I'll have to get a 560 III and set the II as an optical slave.

You would think the flash & triggers would work as they are family.......

That's what I was thinking.

Going to send an email to Yongnuo tonight. Guess I should have done that from the start.

I have Version I of the yn-560, and it works well with the rf-603 triggers. It, and my yn-460 IIs will both fail to fire when

1) they have not had time to re-cycle between shots, or
2) if they have gone to sleep.

If one goes to sleep, the first firing pulse from the rf-603 wakes the flash up. The next will fire the flash.

I could probably add that they will also fail with weak batteries in the 603s, and when transmitter to receiver range is excessive. But, neither of these has happened to me (yet). Anyway, I hope your problem is resolved to your satisfaction. I would hate to deal with Yongnuo directly after reading some of their user manuals. :)

I've yet to really test the range of the triggers. In this case, the lightstand was sitting right next to the camera on the tripod. I was using a nikon remote to trigger my camera for some shots.

I plan to do some experimenting tomorrow.

I have a couple of 560 II's as well and I use Cowboy Studio triggers and never have a problem.

Good to know.

The guy that inspired me to buy my first dslr, and to go off camera with my flash recommended Cowboy Studio triggers, but after a lot of research I ended up with the Yongnuo triggers.
Good thing the triggers are relatively cheap, just in case I have to replace them.

Not sure if this will help; but as you said, others have had that problem and here is what Yongnuo said to do to fix:

Quote: What is the difference with YN 560 II?

The YN 560 II supports RX slave mode.

RX slave flash mode can be selected though pressing down button [Triggering Mode].

The slave flash mode is transmitted by 2.4G radio, respectively supporting YONGNUO wireless trigger RF-602, RF-603.

Choose to support the RF-602 or RF-603 triggering through the Advanced Options settings, provided with 16 channels(CH1-CH16).

Just set the YN560-III and RF-602,RF-603 to the same channel wireless flash can be realized in using.

I did the same thing… I ordered the 560 II only to realize the 560 III could be fired by the Yonguno trigger, so I then ordered the 560 III. It works GREAT! I use the 560 II as a slave. So far, knock on wood, or plastic in this case… both of mine fire every time as fast as I can pull the trigger. Neither of them have ever misfired a single time. I have used them on my last 7 shoots without any problem. In fact I actually like my Yongunos better then my SB900. Yeah, yeah, I know, I'll get grief now, but they fire faster and recycle faster than my Nikon SB900.

Hey What camera do you have ? What triggers do you have ?
I have the Canon 6d with the YN560II,565EX,568EX with the Triggers YN622C (4) never have a misfire. I also use it in a tree too with a 60" reflective Umbrella, I use the 4 transceivers 1 with each flash and 1 on camera to control the flash's with Canon 6d's Flash Menu.

I'm using a D3000 with Yongnuo 603's.

I'm a bit confused now. I was having issues with the flash connected directly to the trigger as well as the sync cable.

Today, I connected it via the cable and had no misfires at all out of 20 shots.

I turned everything off and 20 minutes or so later, I mounted the flash on my light stand and took a few more test shots--no misfires.

Could be, as I was tired and annoyed that night(ain't family great?) I missed something. But so many seem to be having trouble with this combination.
I plan on playing with it later today. If I still have no misfires, I'll put it down as user error.

--------------

I've taken a total of 60 shots today. Out of that I've had one misfire. The one misfire happened after I changed the power setting.
I also noted that the color of the LCD was different. Once I pressed the center button, the LCD went back to it's normal color and I was back in sync. Odd.

Not sure you know, the LCD ready light on the YN's is opposite of what you'd think

Green = not ready

Red = ready.
