Yes, How do I figure what I have here, is it 1:1 magnification, or what?

For comparison scale, shoot a 24-mm quarter at same Working Distance.

Your Nikon sensors are just about 24-mm wide, so at 1:1 magnification, you should capture a quarter edge-to-edge. If you see more than edge-to-edge, like yours, then you have captures just less than 1:1 mag. This is only true if you did not re-focus lens between photos.

Doug, here's a quarter 1st is just the 105mm other is with 68mm kenko tubes. The lens is an old Micro-nikkor 105mm - 1:28, 207639. I thought the 105 could take 1:1

Set your lens to Minimum Focusing Distance. Now move camera & lens as a unit, in-&-out towards subject. When in focus, taker your photo. You should capture quarter edge-to-edge, which will be 1:1 mag (life-size).

Your first image looks like 1:2 mag (1/2 life-size). Your second image looks like 3/4 x 24-mm = 18-mm wide = 1.5:1 mag (1.5x life-size).

Which is your lens?

Nikon made three 105-mm f/2.8 macro lenses.
Is this your lens? http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/105af.htm
Notice the "Limit/Full" slide switch. Must be on "Full" to reach 1:1 mag.

per http://www.kenrockwell.com/nikon/105mm-f28.htm#spex

To find 1:1 magnification (or close), I suggest shooting test images of quarter with only 12-mm Extension Tube; then 20-mm tube; then 36-mm tube.
