Saw the following advice from the Atlanta Journal/Constitution regarding Christmas shopping. Thought you all should know that we are dealing in dead technologies. Can you believe it?! Wow, guess I need to sell all my digital cameras and their accessories before the bottom falls out price wise.

Do not buy dead technologies like digital cameras (cell phones and tablets are taking their place), GPS systems (cell phones and tablets have eliminated their need) or DVD's/DVD players which are a waste of money when you can stream movies and shows.

They will have to pry my Nikon from my stiff dead fingers. I will be dead long before "dead" technology replaces all those things.

Right. The same goes for TVs, watches, clocks, books, flashlights, game consoles, calculators, thermometers, notebooks, tape recorders, or a remote for the TV. All you need is a cell phone.

The sad thing is that some people will take that stupid advice. If they see it in print, it must be true. I can see the family huddled around a 5" screen watching a movie. :D

If you still have a Grandmother and Grandfather, what do you think of them. You talk stupid. What someone should do is to tape you mouth shut for a day, and make you do everything with a digital toy. Also insert ear plugs so you can not hear anything. You are probably so dumb you would enjoy yourself.

Do not buy dead media like the Atlanta Journal. Get the news on your iPhone and android off the internet

since there are no aliens on this forum i'd have to say that for the most part the article is correct.

You won't get me to part with my DSLR or my K1000 either. It's about the quality for me.

I've been struggling to find myself a Christmas present this year and other than a new espresso machine which doesn't take over priced pods (quality coffee making like quality picture taking is an acquired skill).

I think the only gismo i'm tempted by is an android device the size of a usb stick which plugs into the HDMI port of a TV. This will enable me to stream film, and music and pictures to my tv from anywhere. I saw one on the gadget show for £27.50!

It might not quite be ideal just yet, but worth a look I think.

My Grandparents have been dead of 30 years both of my parents have computers and are pretty competent with new fangled hardware. Maybe the kindle online support is a useful thing for those that are not so confident. Pity about netflicks thou I live in the country and my internet access is a bit too slow for streaming films. Good enough to download a great series of tutorials by Phillip McCordall

I lecture to my students on this topic. I urge them to use a combination of old and new technology. Personally I use my cell phone camera 5%, my P&S 10% and my Canon T3i 85%. For navigation I use my cell phone 75% and road atlases and other paper maps 25%. My students have no idea how to use a paper map. The phone map is not helpful in the woods but my topographic trail map works really well. The phone, however, will have a radar picture of the rain so we can leave just before it hits.

My generation (I'm a bit older than their parents) needs to embrace new technology as we will gain an advantage with the knowledge of when to use the old technology. That said we are not buying much old technology as we already own it. I play cassette tapes in my old car (not great quality) while some old friends still play vinal records (good quality if not scratched). Others still use film in their cameras for a certain look.

Whew!

I am safe because even though my DSLRs are dead technology :( they didn't condemn my film cameras to death.

So when all of your DSLRs and expensive lenses are buried in the local landfill I will still be shooting black and white with my Yashicamat medium format twin lens reflex and my Russian Iskra folding camera and shooting color with my Nikon FE and 8008s.

BTW, as you might suspect from this post I am wearing a wrist watch that doesn't have batteries.

I suspect the author of that article is too young to know about film cameras. :D

If I let the dishes sit in the sink long enough, a film forms of top of the dishwater. :D
