I have been given the assignment of taking Christmas photos of the 4 teens and their 5 dogs ------ all together. Yikes. It will be outside, late afternoon on a sunshiny day (today, actually).

My camera is: Canon 5D, Mark 11 with 24-70L lens, 50mm 1.8, and 70-300. I might also use my Canon SX50HS ---- that being my new favorite.

A tripod will be used. (as well as plenty of treats for the dogs.)

Many thanks in advance

Take treats for the teens too. And maybe a few really nice toys as attention getters.

Be sure to tell the boys that you need their attention on you ALL the time while you work to attract the dogs attention. There is this urge to keep looking down at the dogs to see what they are doing and JUSTas you get all 5 dogs looking your way, at least one boy will be looking at the dogs.

This is true with parents and kids. You talk to the youngsters to engage them and just when you get the great expression, mom just HAS to look to see how cute her kids are!

You need to control this early and make it clear that the guys need to keep looking at you NO MATTER WHAT.

Five dogs? Good luck. :-)

A friend was visiting for Thanksgiving, and she kept trying to get a picture of our three dogs in one spot. She never did. Good luck.

The boys shouldn't be too bad to get coordinated. As for the dogs, try this. Get a whistle, or horn, or something like that. When the boys are ready, sound the whistle and press the button to take multiple shots, using a remote. Do that a few times, and you should have everyone looking at the camera, with probably some tilted heads on the dogs. A wired remote might be better than a cordless.

5 dogs ...... and a tripod ....... sounds like a recipe for potential disaster.
You were "Given the assignment"?
If it is on this afternoon, and you have to come here to ask what to do, I would turn it down.

My advice (in addition to the excellent advice given by Cliff) is to not photograph them in direct sunlight. Find some open shade where the background is well behind them and not full of 100 colors either. Find a park, get them in open shade, and get some green or brown bushes in the distant (more than 30 feet) background...that way your background will blur somewhat and won't feel so busy.

Depending on what lens you have, have the dogs faces (as much as possible) be on the same plane as the human faces..(i.e. not 2 feet out in front) so that getting a usable depth of field is easier.

Lastly (and related to that) use a good f/stop so that you don't come back home with dog faces in focus and human faces out of focus or the other way around.

make an investment in a decent book on Photoshop, and piece the whole thing together.

Have a LOUD squeaky toy to get the dog attention. Maybe a shot gun for the teens.

Many thanks in advance

Thanks to all for your replies ----- it went surprisingly well considering the potential for "disaster" - only one dog fell in the pool, and only one teen had to "rush off" to a more important event. I am in the process of PPing in Aperture.
