What a wonderful juxtaposition of light and dark, old and (well, not young, probably middle aged), bearded and non-bearded, but more than that, a delightful visage full of the traces of an epochal life.

I love the shot! The detail again is fantastic and the detail and the lighting on man with the beard is excellent. I can see these two at a livestock barn scrutinizing the animals. The man on the left looks like he is the auctioneer and the man on the right looks like a buyer to me. Hmmm.... Is that hen worth the price?

Thanks CM, the one on the left is the auctioneer, the one on the right is... ermm... his right hand man ;-)

The clerk? Do you have any of the auctioneer in action? Poultry auctions around here are unique experiences.

Chicks and ducks and geese better scurry… (Surrey with the fringe on top! Oklahoma, 1943.)

Man! Wow! You can't "critique" this. Sharp enough to be careful of your eyes. Scale that goes on forever. Composition nailed—thirds, Golden Means, what-ev-er… (Cropping to a square is perfect.) Timing beyond "decisive…" Expression… Story (yeah, what IS he thinking?)…

Awesome. Just awesome.

Thank you Chuck, the scene was very strongly back lit by a window behind them so things were a bit tricky. As to what he is thinking, he is watching for the slightest twitch from bidders. I scratched my nose and found I had bought a dozen point of lay chickens ;-)

Superb Graham.
The light on the bearded guy's head has an almost ethereal quality, like you'd get in a religious film of say the Nativity.

I don't know where you find them, Graham, but you come up with some of the most interesting character studies I have ever seen. Many of your characters, including this one, look like illustrations from a Dickens novel. Well done.

Something looks wrong! There’s bright light from the left on the bearded man’s face but not on the back of the auctioneer’s head.
Anyone lost his halo? I think these two found it and are sharing.. Not necessarily equally though. Perhaps it’s a ‘mysterious ways’ thing.

Hello Mike, it was a very poorly lit auction shed and they were strongly backlit by a window directly behind them, the guys face has been considerably dodged.

Graham, I too really like this shot. When I am trying to shoot portraits of strangers I want the portraits to reveal who they are. You have done this and much more. Everything about this photo is excellent. The thing I'd like to understand more about is when you say his face has been considerably dodged. I would like to know the process you used to do this dodging on his face.
