I'm always fascinated watching birds "hop" along the water, but until recently, hadn't realized they used the surface of the water as a springboard to leap into the air.

I'm adding a new version of the same image after some work in LR5. Which do you like?

I'm not a great fan of "going away" shots unless they have some other "redeeming social value". Your shot is perfectly focused and the water action is frozen, but the original is a bit underexposed and of low contrast. Gray, overcast days do that to us. Your LR5 version is better, you've increased the contrast and exposure and added some color to the water.

In the end, I am not a great fan of this shot.

Thanks for the comments. It was the only decent shot I got that day or I wouldn't have kept it either. It was better than coming home empty handed and it its growing on me mainly because his eye seems to be looking right at me and as you said it is in perfect focus. I also liked how you can see between his wings how the feathers fold up when the wings go up. I had never noticed this before.

Unlike the experts i cannot see the difference in the two shots, I was going to ask you how you confidently ID the gull then i downloaded and magnified and the answer was clear, I would have been happy with that shot.

Thank you oldmalky. I was happy with the shot but just thought I would see if I could improve it a little. I increased the exposure and contrast a little and adjusted the white balance then brought out the reflection by increasing the exposure in that area. It just seems to brighten and bring out the true colors better than the original shot. Thanks for your nice comments.
