Wide open on Program D300

It seems that when I snap a photo, on Program, it always shows the maximum lens opening and 1/2000 shutter speed. I use 400 ISO. Is this normal?

That all depends upon the lighting situation. That's what the camera is metering in that light when you set the ISO at 400. Are the pics properly exposed? Probably.

Then change the aperture, that's what Program mode is for, or use Aperture Priority. You do understand the exposure triangle, right?

I seem to do better in A or M. However I cannot change settings in P with the command dial. I'll keep trying.

In Program the command dial changes the shutter speed, and the sub-command dial changes the aperture.
