SX40 streak - help!

Hi, I've bought and exchanged a Canon SX40, and both do the same thing - at higher optical zooms, and at low light, I get a purple streak across the photo (see shot attached). There is nothing visibly wrong with the lens on either camera. The problem is reproducible in different locations.
Has anyone else had this issue? How do you correct it? Are they both duds (which seems improbable)? Should I ditch the SX40?

Thank you.

Wow....that's a reflection off the lens but I don't understand why you're getting it !

Could your SD card be bad? Is it the same card that you used in both camera's?

After 45 years of computer maintenance and having worked on about every type of memory ever made, I can almost promise you that this is not a memory card problem, unless you are exposing the memory card to magnetic fields. This looks like light reflection to me, but I am at a loss that it has happened with two cameras.

On the subject of magnetic fields, they will do a number on the data that is on a memory card. Be very careful where you lay your cards/chips and where you might locate them when you remove them from the camera. Even refrigerator magnets (flex magnets used as advertising) have enough magnetic power to do numbers on the data stored on a memory chip. Word to the wise....

Definitely not the memory card. I see the streak before the photo is taken.

It would be nice if you could print those out, bring those and the camera to a better photo shop ( not Best Buy ) and see what they have to say !

What color is your focus assist light on the SX40? The S5IS has green. You mention that this only happens at low light, and higher optical zoom.... could it be something on the front of the camera lighting up and reflecting on the lens?

The angle of the streak seems to be identical on both of your pics, and the streak does not go all the way to the edge of the pic. At what we see at the lower right edge of the streak, it appears to be rounded, as if a light is reflecting but being stopped by something - thus never getting all the way to the lower right side.

Is this happening while hand held or on a pod (mono/tri)?

Just some thoughts....

Just an off the wall idea...are you using the screen for viewing or the view finder ? If using the screen, the view finder is supposed to be blocked off to prevent any stray light from getting in there. My Canon came with a little plastic plug type gadget that is clipped onto the camera strap....when you take a shot using live view, you're supposed to snap it over the view finder. I've never used it as I only use the view finder.

I was not using the af assist light, but good thought. I will try the cap as I use the screen more often than not. Thanks for the replies!

I purchased an SX40HS 2 weeks ago and I am not having that problem. I just took 3 35X photos, one low light, to be sure. Works great. Hand held 35X delivers sharp photos. So for, the only problem I'm having is just learning all the many features of this camera.

I read almost 100 reviews of this camera before I bought it and none mentioned having your problem.

Seems improbable that 2 cameras would have the same problem unless the seller received a bad batch of SX40s. This happened to me several years ago. Casio was shipping the EX-Z2000 with bad batteries.

My suggestion would be to call or email Canon directly. If they are having an issue then they will know.

On the SX40 the view finder is turned off when using the screen and vice versa. Note: The view finder is electronic.

Hope it's not too late to post in here, for anyone to read it, but I own my second Canon SX40-HS and discovered something new about it that is quite alarming! The moveable 2.7" LCD display appears to be MAGNETIZED in the lower left corner where it hinges to the camera body! Why in the world would a camera manufacturer put anything magnetic on a camera that utilizes magnetically-sensitive SD card media? I only discovered this by accident, as my camera is sitting next to me on a table where I had a few paperclips. I lifted the camera and the paperclips hung on to just that part of my camera! I have tested it with various small items that would be sensitive to magnetic fields and it is definitely my CAMERA! I'm about to phone Canon's customer support to ask them if they know about this, as I cannot find any mention of it online in any search. Thought I'd throw this discovery out there online in case anyone else has noticed it, or has an explanation.
