I suppose I could have titled this "Footprints in the sand", but that would have defeated the purpose of evoking a story here (and I'd truly be interested in your stories). I have downloaded this directly as is from the camera, to see what others would do with it. There are certain elements that need to be cleaned up for sure, but more emphasis on the striations in the sand might be fun to try to isolate.
This was taken by my daughter, Aubrey, on vacation in 2007, at Crystal Lake in upper Michigan. If you take a look at the water, you can see the lake was named appropriately.
Please feel free to edit to your heart's content, but I'd like to know the accompanying story it brings to your imagination.

For fear of waxing poetic, I quibble with your title. It brings to mind Robert Frost's poem "The Road Not Taken". Here is how the poem ends.
"Two roads diverged in a wood, and I
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference."
Here is my quibble: no such choice in the picture.
Frankly, my first thought is that there is such a difference in left foot and right foot - almost as though they were on two different people or made at diffrent times. That's sort of distracting to me. I get the title, sort of, as there is only one set of prints.

I think the right handed prints have been partially eroded by incoming waves.

show quote)
I see a representation of the temporal nature of existence. The impressions being removed by the inexorable and relentless passage of time, manifested by the continual actions of the waves.
The pleasure of the unseen subject feeling the wet soft sand on bare feet, is a pleasure only for a short while.
It's an inspirational story telling photo.
