I appreciate your sentiments. I believe you are preaching to a choir that has been there done that.
I for one, definitely carry my Driver's license that denotes that I am a veteran, when I go to Lowes to buy home products and take advantage of the 10% off they offer to all vets. If you feel that me taking advantage of that is somehow un-American, then I don't even know how to respond.

That's for the heads up on Lowes, didn't know that. I do appreciate and take advantage of senior citizen discounts when businesses offer them. That's within reason. Expecting a forty percent discount just torqued my wrench.

Sounds like you should be looking for a refurbished or used camera to get that amount of a discount.
BX/PX prices aren't any better than anywhere else. They will do match pricing and not charge tax.

I agree with you. I spent 20 years of my life in the military, and don't expect anything from anyone. I don't even go to the VA for medical.

Quit whining

It's like senior discounts. Why should I get a discount just because of my age? I've always had the attitude that if you make it to 60, everything over that is just a bonus. I'm satisfied with that.

The last time I was asked if I was a senior at a restaurant, there was a couple behind us with a small child. I told the server, give it to them. A young family can use a break a lot more than I can.

Discount - yes
Looking for 40% off because you served - No.

There is no problem with asking about discounts, but asking for a 40% discount is a little over the top.

I'm a DA civilian a GS-13. I've put on the Green suit 6 times and have logged 27 months in combat zones. I don't expect any discounts either. I would like some recognition for the support I provided. Yes as a DA civilian I carried a weapon. Just a 9MM that was issued for protection. Thank God I never had to use it, but I did duck a lot of mortars in Bosnia and rockets in Baghram.

I have been looking for some substantial discounts on photo equipment from any source but all I can find are 10% discounts. If you worked for the store you should get 20%. Is there a buyers co-op or anyone else that really offers to veterans and military a real black Friday markdown year around?

The only way youre likely to get 40% off is buy second hand.

There may be some hookers and lap dancers who will give you 40% off but I think that includes receiving only 60% of their service or performance as well. LOL

I see you have a D3 and an 800E. I also have a D3 and was thinking about an 800E. How do you find the 800E? especially with the huge files? How does the picture quality compare with the D3? Ive heard people just buying the 800E for its huge cropping advantages which would be great for wildlife. Even with my 500mm you need to get quite close and then still have to crop. Do you find you can crop hard and get fantastic sharp images still? The only thing that worries me is the file sizes at 74mb in raw. Did you have to upgrade your ram to accomodate
I would imagine post processing 74mb files would be slow and frustrating?

another thing, I mostly use my 500mm on my D2X 1.5 crop factor which gives me 750mm f/4 which is great but if it was on an 800E and cropped to the same focal length of 750mm in post processing I would imagine a much better resolution image. What do you think? Also They reckon the 800 is more suited to landscapes and 800E is better at wider apertures hence a better camera for wildlife portraits etc that don't require small apertures.?

All you did was ask a question. You did nothing wrong. Some of us old vets take things way too seriously.Hang in there with the information you could use and just forget the rest

Vietnam vets were sent to a war without the authority to do what was necessary to achieve the goals set out for them. Worse, was a political environment without the will or vision necessary for war. The nightmare came when the Vietnam vets were bitterly blamed for the political mistakes that forced that war to go into the history books as a loss.

I was a Navy pilot with a million dollars worth of training. When I got out in 1975 I needed a job. Robertson STOL was a company that modified Cessnas for improved short runway performance. They needed a delivery pilot. In a closed room, the interviewer said, "Your excused. We don't employ people with Vietnam blood on their hands."

Vietnam vets were sent to a war without the author... (show quote)

That was the social behavior that I found inexcusable. I tried to use my military training as part of my resume. It didn't go too well. Seems there weren't too many prospective employers interested in someone with small arms training with "on the job" experience.
I say this with a wry smile on my face.
