LoneRangeFinder,

It is a very nice photograph, nice colors and reflections. I am pleased to see entries in this category, as I would like to increase my knowledge in this area.

I see that your photograph was taken at f/11 with a shutter time of 30 seconds. Was it taken in very low light? If not, why the slow speed? What are the advantages of using a slow shutter speed except for capturing a scene in low light thus avoiding raising the ISO to an unacceptable high level? You can perhaps even out the water, but what else? I’m asking because I like to take low light photographs and I often shoot then with my shutter speed set on bulb. I haven’t photographed daytime scenes using long exposures.

Please help me understand. What advantages/changes in the final photograph does the long exposure offer?

Thanks,
Cheryl

LoneRangeFinder, br br It is a very nice photogra... (show quote)

The best way is to show you, so I'm attaching another photo, taken at the same time of the day-- around 8:00 am on Thanksgiving Day. This exposure was 1/125 @ f/11 and the ISO on both photos was 200. I used a 10 stop neutral density filter to increase the shutter time. I wanted to smooth out the reflections in the water-- so this was the reason for the long exposure time. Advantages? it's decided a different look....

LoneRangeFinder,

Thanks for the explanation. I see what you are saying. I prefer the long exposure.

My lenses have outgrown my neutral density filter so I guess it is time to shop for a new one.

Thanks,
Cheryl

I like it.
Half to one stop less exposure would be nice.
