This fellow let me get pretty close, was using a Canon 6d with a 24-105 lens. The water looks a little too bright for my liking and takes away from the bird, this is cropped a fair bit. Any suggestions either for when shooting to keep the water a little darker or for a fix in post. I had just come out of the swamp and had taken my polarizing filter off about 15 minutes earlier as I was loosing too much light in the swamp.

Thanks for your suggestions.

Looking for a fish dinner!!

Sailor, You might try cropping off the left third of the photo to eliminate the distracting bright reflection. Just a thought. ......... Coot

Hope you like my view of the photo . Good photo BTW.
I did some photo shop to the photo. I adjusted the level and contrast a little then did s light color correction. then did a High Pass filter at 1.5 with a hard light setting . I then cloned the water to fill in the bright spot . I think if yo clop the photo just dd not look as good to me . Hope you like

Definitely an improvement. Especially the feathers. However, look at the bad masking of the shoreline.

I love the sharpness of the bird. You mentioned that the water seemed to bright and became a distraction. I think the water is not too much of a distraction. There is detail and it could be toned down. What did strike me was the way the brown twigs in the background arc right through the birds head. That is a bit of a distraction to me. I think you could clone out those twigs so that it is not as much an arc. Just a thought.

Love the picture, but something wrong with the colors!

Thanks for your suggestions, I never noticed the branches until you mentioned them. I will try some PP (I am not very good at it but practice makes...). I think if I was shooting it again I would try opening the aperture more maybe those branches would have been more blurred and not such a distraction.

Thanks again.

I know what you mean about the colours, I warmed the raw photo a bit and perhaps went to far, I will see what I can do.

Thanks for your comment
