New Smyrna Beach.... The seagulls were flying backwards, the ocean was roiling, and it was raining...... Great day for some out of the ordinary pics with my new SX50

Man! Your timing was impeccable on number 1. The framing device is very effective. Is there any chance you could upload the photo with "store original" checked? If you have me permission to do so, I would love to take this into post processing and see if I could improve it at all.

Thanks Bob!

That was luck, the wind was blowing at least 20-30 knots and the gull very kindly hovered there for a moment. Didn't use the framing option, hadn't discovered it yet.

Yes please do whatever you like to improve the photo, I'd love to see your results. I've attached it with store original checked. Good luck :)

Heirloom Tomato, you might like to join in on this editing opportunity. You always seems to come up with unique ways to interpret a photograph, and I'd love to compare mine with yours. I haven't decided yet whether to go realistic or artistic.

May I post a version too? I was thinking it might look nice with a dry brush painting technique applied.

Hi Bob, I am choosing artistic, but hopefully not over the top. I am in the mode of trying new photo treatments, and I've got something going using the dry brush filter. I straightened the horizon with the new tool that fills in the edges so no cropping is needed. It is an imperfect tool but better than no tool at all!

Great, I will go realistic then.

Hi Curveskarla, Here is one with the horizon straightened and a dry brush effect applied. This is a great photo that would look good any number of different ways...

I might crop or clone out the two small stray branches on left side.

Bob was referring to using the trees to "frame" the gull. It is a very interesting photo, with many points of interest, not the least of which is how the lush green foreground contrasts with the wild gray behind. Very nice!

Most photography purists will probably tell you they don't like the bird in the center of the frame, so we will get that on the table right now. However, I really didn't like taking any more of that very interesting tree on the right hand side. I selected the skies behind the bird to induce a gradient so that it looked like the bird was flying out of dark and into brightness. It also served as way to highlight the gull, which was relatively small and would have faded away into the sky. I lowered the contrast, darkened and cropped out some of the vegetation at the bottom as I wanted to emphasize the flying gull - however, there is still some very interesting stuff going on at the bottom of the photo, just that's it's secondary to the main attraction. I added a color-coordinated matte to give this a finished look.

This one definitely looks better in download mode.
