This guy is among a large group of scholars who see race not as a scientific fact, but a social one. It's an interesting idea that makes a lot of sense when you read about it. It's easy to take his words at face value and be aghast. But look a little deeper at what he has been saying:

"We do not hate you or anyone else for the color of her skin. What we hate is a system that confers privileges (and burdens) on people because of their color. It is not fair skin that makes people white; it is fair skin in a certain kind of society, one that attaches social importance to skin color. When we say we want to abolish the white race, we do not mean we want to exterminate people with fair skin(my emphasis). We mean that we want to do away with the social meaning of skin color, thereby abolishing the white race as a social category(again my emphasis). Consider this parallel: To be against royalty does not mean wanting to kill the king. It means wanting to do away with crowns, thrones, titles, and the privileges attached to them. In our view, whiteness has a lot in common with royalty: they are both social formations that carry unearned advantages".

Now, asking people to commit suicide sounds pretty crazy, and I would be interested in seeing if what he said was truly what he believed, or if it was something taken out of context. On the surface it sounds pretty crazy, but I think this probably requires a more nuanced investigation than just citing a couple of lines from a speech.

What you say is right tschmath and I have to agree with you. So, lets get rid of this non-sense about skin color. From now on, everyone is WHITE, no more black since white is the absences of color and black is all the colors. That way, we no longer think of color since white is not a color.

You really make sense tschmath...

One good thing I can say about the man that with him being white and at his age, he will soon fulfill his own wish. He will be dead. Well, good for him!

Just another communist bloviator whose ultimate goal is the destruction of society, only he's trying to slip it under the door as the race card. Yawn.

If that is what he means, then he is a poor professor. To be so grossly misunderstood, as is his contention here, demonstrates a certain lack of quality of thought and a certain imprecision in the use of the English language. That this is a defense of a university level professor is an unmitigated shame.
