You, done a wonderful job of capturing his facial expression, Grandad, but the background is so blown that it detracts from the photo's all around attractiveness. Maybe a crop to just the face would work?

Swinging Swan, these monkeys roam free on the rock of Gibraltar, what you can see is me taking the image or something that looks like me.
Dave.

I love his expression and you have done a great job on the exposure for him, but I agree with Nightski that the blown background really detracts from the total picture. Have you tried to replace the background.

This was just quickly done with a free texture by Kim Klaussen.
I know this isn't everyone's cup of tea but it might be a way to salvage the photo.

CM, I think if you did that background, but darker, like he was sitting in the shadows, it would look pretty cool.

How dark do you want it?

Okay, don't kill me. Because I couldn't do any of what you have just done. But, the over exposure on the edges of his fur make him look like he's been cut out of a magazine or something. If you could just brush black around his fur to make it look like he's in the dark, it would give you a haunting image. Not scary haunting, sad haunting. That should just be a snap for you, right? :D

Here's another version of a monkey portrait. No artificial background added.

I have played and played with this about as much as I want and can't get it right, so this is the final version. Forgot the attachment, but after seeing HT's version it can just not be posted.

Please explain what you did to get this HT. Did you just make it a sepia?

That's where it ended up. First I cropped it and then went to the "old fashioned photo" box in PSE12. I chose the right-hand style choice (of three offered) and liked it, but I added some texture to emphasize the monkey's rough fur and changed the color tone to sepia. I also added a little vignetting to cut down the white glare of the left side of the background. It doesn't match in color tone but I think it looks OK. Ideally I would have added that before I did the effects. Full screen of this version really gets you involved in the monkey's eye without distractions. Mesmerizing.

Thank you, Country's Mama. Sometimes I get lucky.

The eyes make this picture. They are so spot on focused.

What a beautiful, soulful portrait! Tack sharp on those remarkable eyes, well framed. The blown background is a little distraction. I really like HTs sepia version which solves that problem and also addresses the slighter distraction of the bright colors reflected in his eyes, which didn't fit with the white background. I really like this photo, maybe a contest in its future?
