Charged for back ordered camera.

I recently ordered an OMD E M1 from B&H that was on back order thinking they would bill me when the order shipped.
Not so. Unknown to me, I was charged when the order was placed and eleven days later still nothing and they couldn't or wouldn't provide an expected delivery date. They would not even tell me how far down on the list I was.
I don't mind waiting so much but having paid for it not knowing when it would arrive was too much. So I cancelled.
I'll never order a B/O'd item again.
On the bright side, it gave me time to re-evaluate my decision and decided that the DMC GX7 which is in stock would be a better fit with the M4/3 lenses that I have. Saved my self $400.
Understand your frustration. Just know is a common occurance with back-ordered items, not just with B & H, but many the retailer. For future reference, a fellow UHH member is a rep for B & H and altho I can't remember her name right now(someone will chime in here), she is quite helpfull in acting intermediary.

I think u are thinking of Helen Oster with Adorama. There is a gentleman from B&H who also monitors this site. This is common practice. We do the same informing the customer that if the item is paid for they are on the paid list and that the paid list is cleared before the COD list. I have seen cases where an allotment comes in and there are only enough to fill the paid list and the COD list has to wait for next shipment.

Just my luck it would be a Bostonian to correct me...not that I have any qualms about that....my Dad(a fellow Bostonian) corrected me most of my early life. Not even going to my Grandfather, except to say he came at me with a cast-iron skillet. Oh...those were the day's.

I'm sure that you are joking as you invited the comment with, "I'm sure someone will chime in here." :D :D
Being a Bostonian I am usually the one being corrected. All I know for sure re:Boston is traffic sucks and taxes are high. We are fortunate in that we have several great camera stores where one can shop and get hands on advice. Hunt's, Calumet, Bromfield Camera, Newtonville Camera
I feel for this in other areas who only have Costco, Walmart and Best Buy.

The B&H rep monitoring this site is Hershel
You can PM him for info.

I've done what needs to be done. Not looking for intervention. Just want them to know they could have done better.

I'm from Boston (Brookline actually). That was a fantastic game. Bad way to win, but a win, is a win!

You sure are fortunate. I visited Boston last spring, great town (though the traffic is awful it's no worse than D.C.'s) but what makes it a first rate city in my opinion (unlike my Baltimore) are all those camera shops. I had the privilege of stopping in Broomfield and those guys were great, spent almost an hour just chatting with them. Baltimore has exactly one camera store and if you don't shoot Nikon or Canon then you are out of luck.

Funny thing The assistant coach for the Boston Bruins comes from the same town as me Watched him play hockey as a kid Crowsnest Pass Alberta Canada. His name is Doug Houda.
Most vendors have a notice that the item will not be charged until shipped

We are fortunate. Broomfield is a real experience. A Leica specialist. Gets a lot of visits from celebrities when in town, Robin Williams and Bill Cosby to name a couple. A real old time camera store that keeps on Ticking. In Newtonville, a Boston Suburb, you have Newtonville Camera, another old time, family run business. Hunt's camera, 8 locations in 4 NE States, is also family owned and run and features a massive showroom in Melrose MA. All in all to have three family run camera stores within the greater Boston area there is to want for availability or the ability to get hands on experience, competitive price and deal with great people who know what they are talking about and who built a business on service and customer satisfaction.
In another post someone stated, about a local camera shop, "Best Buy put them out of business" Well it wasn't Best Buy it was consumers who spent at Best Buy rather than the local camera store. I know that others aren's so lucky but I never underestimate how fortunate we are. another plus is that each store has a used equipment department and what a great way to spend a day, going from camera store to camera store looking at used gear
