My son went to start his HP desktop this morning, and the power light blinks about every two seconds, accompanied by a beep. That's all it's doing. Any ideas? Fortunately, he has a second internal hard drive with all the data, but it's still going to be a nuisance.

Unplug everything and start over. That may or may not work.

Could a fuse have blown so it's not actually getting a charge to the battery?

Did that. Google produced a suggestion that worked for some, but not for us - remove and reinstall the memory.

I'll check that.

There are many reasons why a computer won't start but I'd go for the hard drive first. If you can get hold of a hard drive unplug the drive in the computer and plug in the other drive. If it does not work it will eliminate it.
A mother board is unlikely but could be and, of course there is the power unit itself.

Same thing has happened to me twice. Unpluging it will not completely cut the power if the battery is still installed. Remove the battery for a minute. After replacing it, hold the start button down for about 15 seconds until the computer comes to life.

And remember to unplug the power cord at the same time. Then when before you plug in the battery again, plug the power cord first to check that it supplies power to the laptop.

It looks like it's a memory problem. I get five beeps and five flashes and then a pause. According to HP, that means a memory problem. I've removed and reinstalled. This time, I'll try cleaning the contacts.

Look in the trouble shoot section in manual. Some have the beep systems problems.

It is not your hard drive, your PC would still post even if the hard drive was bad. It does not seem to be your power
supply because your PC blinks. Reseat your memory and
video card and see if that solves the problem. Ask your son
if he did anything to the PC before he started having the
problem.

When people have problems, one solution is to try alcohol, so I did. I had several drinks, and I completely forgot about the computer problem! Fantastic!

I removed the memory again and cleaned the contacts with alcohol and reinserted them. When I turned it on, there was no blinking or beeping, and the power button stayed white, rather than amber. The hard drive light is blinking, but the monitor is black - in power saver mode. I'll let it run for a while and see what happens.

I hate to ask Jerry, but might it be your monitor? If your HD light is blinking it usually means that your computer is
running. Check your monitor, have some drinks first.

That's a possibility, but it does turn on.

I just tried it again, and everything works. I guess the original problem was bad contact of the memory cards.
