For the "Grammar" Police.

Grammar is racist.... It's that "white privilege" again!
I have just spent three weeks in Shanghai, as well as a couple of weeks on the East Coast of USA/Canada.
In China recently, (Oct - Nov 2013), especially on the CCTV English language channel, there has been a great deal of discussion about the academic downgrading of learning English.
This article sums it up:
http://www.theguardian.com/world/2013/oct/22/china-english-college-test-gaokao There is a growing confidence and national pride in China which is very evident. Could it be that the importance of English speakers needing to learn Mandarin if they wish to succeed in international trade/business will soon be a major issue for the west?
I believe the word Police warranted the quotes and not the word grammar. The reason is that grammar in this case is an adjective of the word police. The use of the word police to describe someone or a group who are not actually in law enforcement warrants the use of quotes.
Good post. I am not the Grammar Police. I do notice when punctuation, spelling or misuse of words or terms are used. The reason? I usually have to reread what was written to understand it.
To use poor spelling or punctuation does not liberate you from the Grammar Police. It indicates a lack of desire or knowledge to communicate fully. English is a difficult subject; but so is photography. We learn to use photographic terms correctly, yet refuse to use the correct form to seek or relay information in this Forum.
I am far from perfect in my Grammar, but I do use spell check and know the little green squiggly line means something is grammatically wrong. I do read what I am about to post to insure I am communicating what I intend.
Does this make me a Grammar Policeman? No, I just have to struggle to understanding what the writer wishes to convey.
I am sure this will cause a lot of condemnation and, I hope, some agreement, but for those of us that make the effort to communicate clearly it needs to be said.
English, with its grammar, is capable of great precision when communicating ideas, or technical information. Unfortunately, students such as this, and often enough, faculty, are willing to weaken the precision of the language by allowing (or encouraging) sloppy language use.
I have an electrical engineer friend who does business in China often, traveling there several times a year. When sitting in the tea shop gossiping they talk in Chinese. When in the office discussing the latest project, they talk in English. Chinese, because of its structure is not capable of the precision necessary for this task. Chinese has worked perfectly for several millennia in an agricultural environment, and is a beautiful, expressive language; but for technology, even the Chinese prefer English.

Nah Larry, it certainly doesn't, and it doesn't bother me if someone corrects mine... I do my best to keep from making Mistakes... I just get tickled at those who Immediately holler

And if you will notice the time posted, it is often within 5 minutes of the post in question.... ie Like some who love to make nasty comments about certain folk on here....They hover over the Computer, gleefully watching for something that their feeble little minds and typing fingers can leap upon to (in my opinion) show how intelligent they are....
Just a little foible in my list of small irritations..

And mine!
Mike, I make it a point not to point out the mistakes of others. I make too many myself. I don't like to see people deliberately embarrassed or needlessly criticized. Despite typos and misspellings, I can usually figure out what the writer means anyway.
My main concern is the use of capital letters and their meanings. For example, it took me a month to deduce that "BIF" means "Birds in Flight." I am slowly learning, through painful deduction, what these abbreviations mean. As a newbie, I have a feeling it will take quite a while. :|

I think people, especially the younger folks, are getting so accustomed to texting, that acronyms are their norm. Everything is reduced to a few letters that, so far as I can tell, only THEY can read. As if that weren't bad enough, now and then I get stuck trying to decipher texting in Spanish!! OMG! WTF! etc., etc.

Now that is what I dislike, subbing letters for words or thoughts.

I believe it'd be a vast improvement if ALL of us would stop and proofread our posts before sending them.

Me too. sometimes I am too much of a hurry for no reason at all and do not take the time to check. I am still looking for the person that is perfect enough to really be the grammar and spelling police. :P
