Hey Boots, thank you for sharing your little one with us.

To be honest I am not a fan, but I say this from my point of view and that I hope I can help with future shots.

In the original there is just way too much going on. The obvious focus is on your pooch, but the background is distracting and pulls from your image. Ideally an aperture change would have blurred the background, but knowing these situations it is not always possible to setup your camera and not miss the shot. Another consideration then would be to change your perspective, either by moving left or right, or even up or down. Others will suggest removing the leash and the background in post which may be the way to save this image. Try it as you obviously know how. The pose is nice, but her eyes seem to squint against the early day sun which also reflects in the overall glare of the image. And finally, the grass in the second looks over processed. I understand the need to boost saturation at times, but not when it makes it look unnatural.

It is not all bad though as I love your pooch and imagine her to be a riot! I hope you take this as intended and that it helps. Steve

Thanks Steve. I didn't intend to get that much saturation in the grass but couldn't figure how to get it back to where it was. I did put the catch lites in the eyes, too much maybe?

If you come home and your little one is missing PM me and I'll let you visit 'em. So cute!

Old Boots, I love your dog!

I have dogs about this size. May I post a photo to show you an angle that I love using when photographing a smaller dog?

Here's a revised photo of your dog. I moved him away from the not-so-photogenic porch with the content aware move tool in PSE12, and did cloning to re-create his rope, get rid of the porch, and clean up a few things. I lightened shadows as well.

Oh, and I cropped and brightened it, too. I hope you like it, you have a nice looking dog.

What is he, Boots?

A Jack Russel X smooth English pointer?

Great pose! He's holding on a sparrow!

Yes Nightski Please do. I have about 6 more outside larger dogs hanging around and under the porch I can practice on.

Yes I do like it HT (I've noticed several posters call you that). Thank you. I don't have that program. Does it work like cloning or can it be done in LR, gimp or Picasa or Lightzone? I had the grass too green but couldn't figure how I did it. You made a very nice photo out of it. Thanks.

I don't know what else, Dave, because he was passed off as a Chihuahua. One of his brothers is barely a handful whereas Ace barely fits my lap.

Old Boots, I'm so glad you like it.

HT is just fine. I like that nickname. If you want to get Adobe Photoshop Elements 12 it is on sale right now at Costco and Sam's Club for about 50 dollars. A bargain at that price. Version 12 just came out and they included the content aware move tool. The tool is easy to use. You can't do it in the programs you mentioned as far as I know. I saw the photo and thought, "Aha, a perfect opportunity to use the content aware move tool." I had to do a little cloning afterward but not too bad. You can do a lot of good things with the programs you have though. Your original version was fine to work with. All the needed information was in there. :P

Given your location that may be a problem for me to knock on your door.

These are two of my favorite photos of my male Westie. By getting lower than him, I have captured this King of the Hill pose. It's also fun to catch your dog in action. Your dog could easily do this jump. It was made from materials bought from the plumbing section of Menards. PVC pipe mostly.

BTW...last weekend he sniffed out a grouse. He followed his nose right up to it, and it didn't fly until he practically touching it with his nose.

Of course I was yelling for him to come back. I was sure his nose was on the trail of some deer guts left behind by a hunter. I didn't want to ride all the way back to town with deer gut dog in my car. When that grouse flew, I was amazed. These dogs are bred to kill small varmints, not to sniff out birds.
