Hello everyone . My question is this I am thinking of purchasing a used Nikon 12/24 F4 zoom . The asking price is 220.00 because it has dust and fungus issues but apparently does not affect images. It cost around 100.00 to have the lens cleaned . That makes the invesement 320.00 for this lens . I shoot Nikon a Nikon D300 and have no experience with wide lenses . Would this lens be worth getting cleaned up? I am looking for opinions . Thanks Very Much .
Thanks for the info. I know its an expensive lens ,I am just wondering if its worth it to have it cleaned . Are lenses OK after cleaning Fungus issues ?
Wow. If you can get that stuff out seems like a great deal.
Camera shop say's it can be done. May take a few weeks though. I been wanting a wide lens for some time now . The seller is motivated because they have found a lens they want . Just not sure if fungus can be removed completely ?
Wow I had no idea .Thanks for the info on his site . I am on the west coast of Canada so shipping could be an issue ? I will have to check it out . Thanks again .
That's a great price for that lens , Thanks for the heads up .
Ask yourself this - if it is an $1100 lens, why wouldn't the seller spend $100 getting it cleaned and then sell it second hand for $600 for a $500 gain.
The seller is prepared to sell it for $220, instead of getting $500 towards a new lens purchase.
What does that tell you?
Never thought of that . That's a very good question . The Sigma is on sale @ BH Photo for not much more so than the cost of this used lens . I think that may be the way to go. Thank you very much . Good thinking.
Fungus consumes lens coatings. Removing the fungus may be possible, but there is a very strong chance that the lens IQ may never be the same.
$570 to $700 used at KEH, with a warranty.

Whoever told you removing fungus from a lens' internal components would cost $100 is either a dreamer, OR someone selling a lens with fungus inside it!
Removing fungus is a painstakingly slow and EXPENSIVE process. Nikonian has already addressed to worst case scenario with the fungus damaging the lens coating, this would mean complete replacement of that element. PLUS, odds are very high that if one element has this issue, several more are likely to have it also. Fungus is a living organism and is growing and spreading as you consider this purchase.
Invest wisely and consider a better used lens if this is the one you are set on.
I have the Sigma 10-20mm and it is a really nice lens. Very sharp. Great price on that too.
