This is a favorite of mine from a recent park shoot- any critique before I print? I want it to be the best it can be. Thanks.

it looks a little dark on my monitor- yours?

Lucas,
Yes, looks a little dark on mine also. Do you have any PP that could lighten it up for you?

I do- will work on that ASAP. It is so helpful to view one's photos on multiple screens as one may be "off."

I used some fill light and now the baby looks too soft. Even added a little contrast. Any suggestions?

I like the shot; but I think the second image is just a little to light. The background now is a lot more in focus.

In Photoshop, you can add a layer filled with 50 percent gray and set it in Overlay mode. You can then use a brush with black or white to dodge or burn selected areas. You can use a low opacity with the brush. Since it's being done on a separate layer, it's easy to correct mistakes if you are a bit too aggressive.

Don't know what program you're working with but where you used the fill light is there a shadows bar? If so try to darken the pic just a touch.

I did that. I'm afraid that Picassa just isn't enough for this photo...

Yeah, you talked me into it. I really need to buy and learn photoshop! Picassa is very limited.

Here's an example of what I mean. I opened the file as a raw file in Adobe Camera Raw and boosted the exposure to lighten the image, then opened it in Photoshop. I created a Soft Light layer (Soft Light or Overlay give very similar results), went back to the image and isolated the mother and child, inverted the selection, and painted with a very large brush at 32 percent black to darken the background. Except for selecting the mother and child, it took less time to do it than to explain it. Looking at it up here, I might want to lighten the mother and child a bit more, but I didn't want to lose detail.

I edited with Photoshop CC, and I adjusted the 'level' up. Then I raised the contrast.

Here are the results.

A nice angle of view. :)

looks very close to RMM's copy.

Edited - Contrast adjusted.

I like the darker background, so I used Viveza to work the highlights and also darkened the back just a bit

Also added some structure to mom's hair to give body.
