Bosque del Apache, November, 2012
this was one of many sites favored for snacking beforereturning to roost sites for the night. I set up my folding chair, tripod / camera and myself covered with one-size-fits-all Portable blind ( 9'x12' camo net) over everything) near the water's edge, and settled in to wait. Should have set up further rom water because I was soon surrounded by scattered sandhill cranes , some within a few feet. they finally retreated to the water to dab about for aquatic mud invertebrates. Shot in RAW with EBTR . This guy, I'm sure, knew I was there and just didn't care...looked diretectly down his beak at me...moved his head horizontally a few inches right... few inches left as if the get a better view through the camo netting, tilted his gase as if to ask"Who the Hell do younthink you're foolin'?" and went back, unconcerned, to feeding. Too nice a late afternoon to get his knickers in a twist!
C&C please

The muted colors and light make this a very pleasing image for me. Gorgeous, in fact :) Only thing I'd do is crop out the foreground grasses.
Love your story too
Dave, I would have lightened that shadows had I taken this pic. It's so easy to do with the software we have now, and my first inclination is to lighten it up so I can see every detail.
I am very happy you did not do that. It has made me see something. You would have lost that late afternoon feel if you had done that.
I also agreed with Linda, at first glance, about cropping those pesky OOF grasses out. After looking a minute, I decided that my first instinct to do that was also wrong. The foreground grasses lend perspective to the image.
I am learning quite a bit watching the way you do things. We shouldn't be so quick to make everything so perfect. Sometimes we ruin our own imperfectly perfect image. :-)

I agree. This does work well as a square shot with silky water instead of jumbled grasses in the foreground. The mood and lighting are lovely.

The title fits this well composed, interesting and serene image perfectly. I think the muted reflections of the grasses in the foreground is a nice detail and adds to the atmosphere of the picture. Thanks for the thread Dave. 8-)
