Nice shot! Would you mind sharing your settings? I never seem to get enough light in HS gyms to get any sharp action shots.

Hi All,

Thanks for the nice comments.

By no means am I an exspurt with a camera, get lucky now and then.

The settings are using a Nikon D-600 Camera with a Nikor 50mm F1.8 lens, aperture was 2.8, using Manual mode with shutter of 1/500, White Balance was set in Pre-Mode. (not that it mattered once I used Photoshop to convert to Newspaper Monochrome)

I set the Pre White Balance using a white coffee filter as suggested to me by one of the best guys "ERV IN OHIO", and most skilled photographer's on this site, who has helped me from the day I got the courage to sign in when I purchased my first DSLR a Nikon D-5000, which I still have an think is a nice Camera.

How I use the Coffee Filter is to get the Gym just a little early and walk out on the court locate a place where I will be taking most of the photos, most of the time near the base line as that is where the action is. In that area, I take the camera off auto focus, hold the filter up set the camera to take the Pre-White Balance, click, if I get a "Good", then I am good to go.

In some Gym's our county is extremely cheap and the lights are terrible, so each one is different and times I use the Sports Mode under scenes.

Hope that helps, I have had fun taking photos of our grandson's at football, and basketball.

Our high School has a Facebook page where the photos are posted, and the greatest reward is the enjoyment the High School kids and their families having those memories.

Thanks to all for looking, the comments, happy with that photo, even a blind pig in a snow storm finds an acorn now and then.

Blessings,

tom

Hi All, br br Thanks for the nice comments. br b... (show quote)

Thanks, Tom. What ISO did you use?

Most of the time ISO was 1600, I had to adjust it up or down a few times due to darker area's of the Gym. As I recall I did go from 800 to 2000 and found most of the sweet spot around 1600.

Once I reached the 2000 plus even as good as the Nikon D-600, began to see some noise that took away from the photo....Noticed it a lot when I got home and on the Computer and wanted to bump up to enlarge a particular shot.

As you know most High School Gyms' have poor lighting for photos....this one had one bank of lights out on one end of the Gym, an other the ballast was starting to fail with a bit of 60 cycle flickering...

Thanks for looking and the inquiry.

Grandsons have another game in the Gym tonight at 6pm.

Blessings,

tom

Tom;

I would try shooting at f 2 or even 1.8.
The depth of field has a lot of distracting things in-focus.

Nice work Tom; Have looked at many of your photo's and you do a nice job with the sports shots.
I am wondering if everyone who posts a shot could let the viewers know what camera, lens, settings, etc. they are using?
Sure would make it nice and also keep from always asking that question after the photo's are posted. lol
I've thought of posting this in the main topics page. What do you all think?

If you tick the 'Store Original' box, then the uncompressed picture is available for inspection, hopefully with the 'exif data intact.

Hi Tom,

Great shot! If you're ever in my neck of the woods I'm offering an open invite to attend my grandson's games. Bring your camera.
