I've been looking at getting a new computer for photography. I've been looking at a new IMac 27" Today my wife comes home from work an told me that the guy in charge of IT said I should not buy any computer until after the new year. He told her something new will be announced after the 1st. Only problems all the sales will be over. Has anyone heard anything like this?

I think new computer enhancements are always going to occur.... we have not had giant leaps in many years... I would not think that after the 1st is not going to change your methods of working on a pc ..or provide such earth shaking innovations ...

I would buy the MAC.... you will get many years of use.

The new Mac Pro is coming out in December, haven't heard of anything new beyond that. The iMac was recently updated in October of this year. It's hard to find deals on Macs, Apple doesn't allow much variation. Best Buy sometimes has them cheaper. I'm in the market for a 27' iMac myself, so if you hear anything I'd love to know.

Buy a new computer thses days, and in 6 months, it'll be out of date(far as hardware). Software can easily be updated. That being said, I wouldn't buy new hardware/software for 6 months. Let them get all the bugs out, but not on me.

The new Mac Pro as far as desktop's will be a 'super' computer but it won't becoming cheap. It will be a lot more than an iMac because it is a lot more than an iMac (or any other desktop or laptop). If you have the bucks I suggest you wait for it in December. I'm sure PS, LR and other programs will work in a blink of the eye. The reason I'm saying this is because I purchased the new iMac 27" last January and it is the best computer I have ever owned in over 30 years. I can and do run LR, Aperture and PhotoShop at the same time and all moves along quite fine.
The iMac released in October has a faster processor so I expect it to be even better than mine. The Mac Pro will be even better but with it you would need to purchase a monitor, keyboard and mouse as the Mac Pro is just power plant (but if you did you would be the envy of every nerd in the neighbourhood  ). If you were to go with the iMac I would suggest you went with the 3tb 'fusion' drive but go with the minimum 8gb of RAM. Then upgrade your RAM with after market product which costs about 1/3 of what Apple charges. I upgraded with two more 8gb RAM Simms to a total of 24gb (the 27" computer will actually allow you to upgrade to a maximum of 32gb).

Short version: Get the best you can afford as soon as you can. Computers will always be getting better and if you wait, you will be waiting all your life. You don't know what your future will be so enjoy life now while you can, don't wait.

I agree with this ...the 27" iMac is a great computer machine. I have mine configured with 16G of RAM and it rocks. I can switch between Lightroom and Photoshop with ease.

Don't rule out looking into the Apple Store for a refurbished unit. I did that with the MacBook Air and learned that these units are often not used at all but were not received by the purchaser. You will save a good deal

I don't know of any new products on the line but there are often inventory reduction sales in January. If not you can always ask a better price, helping relieve inventory after the Christmas rush.

The flip side is that particular model may be sold out by Christmas.

I think I've heard a similar story every year for at least the past five years. I'm still waiting for the 1st of the year miracle breakthrough.

Yes, time and time again.

Pure BS (as sales goes) as to new technology coming out next month? Yup, all the time, plays on two sales trigger levels:
GET IT NOW (discount)
GET IT IN ONE MONTH (Greater 'capability - You get 'sucker' painted all over your forehead here as prices will go down once the immediate interest falls off)

What should determine your purchase time frame is:
Your projected needs (as a photographer, now)
Your future needs (How upgradable this rig will be)
Your budget (as a business or person)

Then:
Your dream machine, whatever that maybe.

It's rare to announce a new machine after the big sales seasons have slipped by. The only reason to do so would be if an engineering or manufacturing problem delayed a planned announcement. We're just entering the holiday madhouse scene, and Apple just updated the 27" iMac in September. Yes, six months later, there will probably be a new model. That's ALWAYS going to happen. As for the new Mac Pro, unless you're going to be sitting in front of it editing videos or gigantic photo images all day long, it's a luxury buy. The iMac, preferably loaded to the gills with RAM, is plenty of machine.

I suggest you check on www.macrumors.com. They have a buyers guide tab that is helpful.

I have been using a 27" iMac, with 16 gigs of RAM. When I purchased this machine the benchmark scores on it were higher than the comparison model of the Mac Pro which was long in the tooth so to speak.
I don't think you will find any great price reductions on Macs even after the first of the year and Christmas buy seasons ends.
If you do purchase a iMac make sure you get the Apple care, not only does it extend you warranty, but allows you access to get tech support for the length of the Apple Care warranty. If the tech support people cant solve your problem via phone they will make arrangements to get you an appointment at an Apple Genius bar, or to have the machine shipped back for repairs. Prior to the 27", I had a 24" as well as a 20". iMacs are great machines especially when editing photos.

If you want to save a few bucks, check out the Apple Store web site and look for refurbished iMacs. Check to see which models are available (changes from day to day). These qualify for the normal warranty, and you can add Apple Care. I'm posting this from a refurb 21" iMac.
