It is a type of print (from commercial print houses) that really captures rich colors well. It doesn't make a difference in a portrait or a black and white but this one, or one of clowns, really show up well.
Should have put it down as metallic.

Wonderful photograph.Everything about it is texture and colors superimposed on a liquid landscape. Don't worry about the rule of thirds, or split horizon. I love the reflective halves.

Beautiful landscape where the eyes move to the dark silhouettes of land and trees then happily absorb the atmospheric colors and repeating shapes. I think the composition works here even though the horizon line splits the scene into halves, although you could have two more delightful images by cropping one with more sky and one with more water. All of them work well.

Backstory: This happened yesterday. Saw the clouds when letting the cat in half-hour before sunset, grabbed the camera bag, took off to the lake, got hung up in roadwork, persuaded construction guy to stop traffic and let me across to the water. Realized I had on house slippers while tumbling down the riprap, no tripod, no filters, wrong lens. One other photographer there, a pro who's published several books, and he was no better prepared than me, both of us trying to prop cameras on rocks. It looked like the sunset water scene from the movie Life of Pi.

Now what? No real center of interest - dead water lilies are hardly scenic. Can color be the center of interest? If I get the horizon from the middle, what do I remove? The sky or its reflection? I've done portrait crops on several -they're nice, but I want to do justice to the broad scene too. I don't know that this is the best shot. I took about 70, till the light was gone, because the sky and water was constantly changing. Wish I could a dozen & ask you to help me pick.

One thing for sure, I won't be converting this one to monochrome. Any advice, and sample editing, is appreciated.

I hope you gave the construction worker a tip for stopping traffic for you!
This is really beautiful!!
At first I wasn't sure if those were clouds or reflection. The color is amazing.
Love the contrast of the Lillys .
Well worth the bedroom attire .

Stunning image and everything said already is what I was feeling, but could not articulate as well. Love your back story, love your photograph!

Right place. Right time. Right shot. Rule of thirds need not apply. Wouldn't change a thing. Make it big and hang it.

I just thought, what a great screen saver! You are going to need a marketing team soon.

To Rudolf, Bmac, Emm5, Linda, Photoninja1, jrb1213,
Just wanted to thank you for the encouraging comments and granting me permission to break photography's honored rules. Rudolf even gave me a name for it - reflexive halves - I really like how that sounds. No, Emm, no tip (no purse, no money, no shoes, nothing but camera) but I did profusely thank him. Jrb, I'd need a heck of a marketing team to ever sell anything. But I appreciate all you guys.

Dirtpusher posted this in links and resources. It is about "rules of composition" and I think you'll find it interesting. http://www.naturephotographers.net/articles1110/ab1110-1.html

Thanks, nice article with illustrations. Guess mine falls into the Centered category, deemed legitimate. I like Rudolf's term better though. Reflexive halves. It has a poetic sound to it, and it's fun to say out loud.

Also, if you use that term you could charge more money in a gallery for it, the art world being what it is. :-P

Add me to the list of people who find this to be phenomenal. I'm half tempted to go in with a spot healing brush, remove the dead plants, and leave you with a mirrored image.

Don't do that, I have some without the lilies! But they're not quite as nice, the water was more ripply and there was a jet trail chopping through the sky. I've made my peace with the lilies, they gave it a weird kind of 3d effect in person.
Thanks for the comment!

I vote to keep the Lilies. I decided that the first time I saw the photograph. They add something very special to this image.
