Drum Point Lighthouse, Solomons, Maryland-Road Trip 2013 #56

Hexagonal, cottage type lighthouse.
Restored with living quarters.
Also, has fog bell with mechanical striker.
This lighthouse is part of the Calvert Marine Museum.

What an interesting lighthouse. Never saw one like that before. There are some nice ones on the Oregon coast too if you ever head west.

In Image 9, the handle attached to the gear:
I believe this is used to rewind the weights.
It would not remain attached while the striker is in use.

Also, the chain and weights extend thru at least two floors.

I hadn't either.
Apparently, this was a popular design on the Chesapeake Bay.

The wife I plan to head out west next summer. So, we will be up in that area!

Did you stop in St Micheal's, Md? There is another light house similar to Drum Point located there. Very picturesque little town on the Chesapeake. There is another one on display in the Inner Harbor in Baltimore as well.

Excellent series, very interesting. When the lighthouse was in use, I hope they had a bigger source of light than that bulb in #10. :lol:

I'm sure there was a different or better source of light. It was common to find a "weak" light so the lighthouses wouldn't be completely dark.
