New Nikon 80-400 - Dust Issues

Good evening all,
Brand new to the forum and hoping to be a quality contributor. I am glad I found this forum as I feel I can learn a lot from the folks here.
To the point! I just acquired the new Nikon 80-400 lens. I was putting it through the ringer when the sun hit the face of the lens just right and I noticed dust. I go to cleaning and realize what I am seeing is actually dust particles, clearly visible, under the lens.
Is this a common issue? Aren't lenses of this quality sealed so this can not happen? I would think it had to happen during the mfg process. I am hoping they will address the issue with no hassle. I would think when you spend that kind of money on a lens you can expect it to be clear of these types of issues?
Anyone had this issue? How was it handled?

It is normal for a zoom to eventually collect some dust in the internal elements but it is not considered normal that a professional zoom come from the manufacturer with dust inside.
There have been many complaints lately regarding Nikon Service. I do not question if they are going to say that it is your fault and it could be a battle trying to get service from them.
I no longer use Nikon to service my gear but that is me.

Thanks for the response William. I am hoping the seller will make it right with me. If Nikon gives me grief then can a camera shop service the lens? What are my options?

I am sure the dealer that sold you the camera, if a good dealer, will help you solve the problem.
The lens is very expensive and if I had to have it cleaned I would go with a reputable repair shop. I use APS (Authorized Photo Service) located in Morton Groove, Illinois but I really questioned if you are going to be left alone on this. I am sure the seller will back you up having your lens cleaned or he could offer a replacement.

First, was the lens NEW or USED when you "acquired" it?
Second, is it the old AF model, or the newest AF-S model lens?
It is the nature of extending lenses to suck dust into them, it cannot be avoided. The lens needs air to fill the extra volume created by zooming and that air comes from the atmosphere around it. If there is dust in the air then dust will be getting into the lens. The worst examples of this are the older style "push-pull" zooms, they are literally vacuum cleaners that way. Two ring zooms are slower to extend and therefore pull the air in slower and have less of a tendency to pull in large amounts of dust.

I contacted the dealer this morning and they were unwilling to do anything for me and told me to deal directly with Nikon. I will not be using them again anytime soon.
Looks like I am going to have to send it back to Nikon and have them warranty it. It will be covered, but will take anywhere from 4-6 weeks.
I just got the lens and have only taken about 20 shots with it. Very frustrated!
I understand that zooms will attract dust, but a brand new lens? The dealer tried to tell me that it could have gathered dust while in transit (in the box and wrapped in plastic). Really?

Your dealer is full of it. These lenses are made in a "Clean Room" with no dust present. If it was brand new and had dust then the dealer has had it out of the box and used it in the store or elsewhere, its quite possible it had been sold and returned also, just carefully repacked to look new. Nikon will take care of it, likely by sending you a brand new replacement if you explained the situation well to them.

Funny, I called the dealer back and asked to speak to the manager (which I should have done the first go around). He was absolutley great and told me a new lens was in the mail.
Said I would receive a return slip and take my other lens to the Fed-Ex station and get it shipped back to him.
He apologized profusely and seemed very genuine about the issue.
Apparently I spoke to a new kid in their repair department that gave me the standard line, but he promised that would never happen again.
So, I guess I am happy, if I get the new lens and it's clean that is.

Yet another reason not to buy Nikon. All the problems discussed above appear far too often on this site are a very good reason to avoid buying anything Nikon.

I know plenty of owners (that are not members) of other top player brand cameras who go through similar issues, if not more. I'll stick with Nikon.

Hi Bill, no I am not an expert, it's just because I am considering buying a Nikon, and topics like this which are not unusual make me wonder is it worth while considering such a purchase.
