Bird and Web
Hi Ken,
I like it. The background color says sunrise (or sunset) without seeing the photo title. The highlights on the silk strands and bird are nice accents. I like the composition; some may say you shouldn't have the bird on the left and facing out of the frame. But I think it works nicely. The whole silhouette seems just a little soft. Was that intentional? I like it that way, by the way.

I like this also. A well composed interesting image. Thanks for the post. 8-)

I am just learning about minimalism. Feel free to correct me. I would like to see more sky and less branch. I love the color of your sky for this. It lends an atmosphere that I like.

Thank you.

Ahhh.......I think you might reconsider your original composition Ken..what do you think? :)
I really like backlighting through feathers or fur.
One of the things that can happen though is the high contrast between the subject and sky can give chromatic aberration from the lens. That is the purple fringe around the bird and branches. Lightroom has a tool to remove the fringe.
The higher quality of the lens, the less fringe there should be. With lenses most of us can afford, some fringing seems unavoidable in some situations. Maybe someone with a 200 - 400mm f4 or 500mm f4 lens can give an opinion.
Right now I can only dream about $6000 lenses.
edit - I removed as much of the purple as I could

ab-so-friggin-lootly gorgeous! yeah, yeah, I know the bird's looking "out" of the frame rather than into it, and it's not on the grid of R.O.Thirds...but I love it. I can hear the bird and smell the moist morning air and feel the sun's warmth around the bird's shadow on my face....and it makes me feel so damned happy!
....and NOBODY can argue that! So sue me!
it might not take a ribbon, but it's a great contender for the People's Choice Award!

Bmac, I like the first posted image. I went out to capture the sunrise cloud colors when this small fluffy ball of feathers flew in to the shot [First]. In a few minutes the pastel colors would wash out as the sun cleared the horizon so I shifted my focus to Fluffy. I zoomed in.
I am sure the bird was waiting for the rays of sun to hit and warm [Second]. This gave me some time to set up. Finally the Sun rays back lit him but getting him in profile/frame/thirds/aperture/shutter speed/ISO was still a challenge.
post production has been minimal. I did not try de-fringe. I did adjust the color a bit to recreate what I saw.
Any Input at all is welcome.

Thank you snails_pace. I did not even think of the fringe removal tool. I think it is available with PE 9, but I do not know where or how to use it.
I agree with Uuglypher's comments on why the first image is such a delight!
The distant view of trees and golden sky is stunning. I'd crop a tiny off the bottom, but otherwise, I love it! Super-interesting for the contrast between silhouetted trees (which are just perfect in their bare-ness :) ) and the bright white of sun peeking through that rich gold color.
