Can anyone tell me the difference between the "D" and the "G" models, besides the price. Is the G just a newer model, or is there a benefit to the G? I'll be using it on a D3100(with a SB700 flash at times) and I've been wanting to get a "nifty fifty." I think this might be it since it is about half the price of the f1.4 and I'd like to stay with Nikon glass. Can anyone provide any posative comments or advice? My other "short" lens is a 18-55mm but I think I'd like the added aperture. Thanks . Merry Christmas. Don
D = A-F but no VR
G = A-F & VR
Thanks. Does $200 sound fair for a refurb?

Technically, a "Refurbished" lens is nearly unused, or demo-used, but cannot be sold as "New". A true Refurbished lens will also have a manufacturer's warranty. $200 for a nearly new Nikkor lens sounds good.

The D lens won't autofocus on your D3100. "D" lenses only autofocus on bodies with a built-in focus motor, like a D90. The "G" lenses, however, have a focus motor in the lens, so they don't require one in the body.

OOPS! I forgot that one little fact. I own a D5000 and a D90, so I should know better.
D = A-F (motor in body) and
no VR
G = A-F (motor in lens) & VR in mid & long telephoto lenses. I was wrong about VR in new 50-mm f/1.8.
VR is important in telephoto, because of exaggerated lens movement during hand-held photography.
Not so important in wide & "normal" length lenses.
Because of the built-in motor, G lenses are wider than D lenses.
One more question if I may,..According to the Amazon reviews the G model doesn't have an aperture ring as the D model does and they claim no VR. Does that imply that it can only be used on DX format camera's and then the aperture is adjusted by the camera wheel in A or M mode with a D3100? Can you recommend a better substitute(please don't say a better camera)? I'm fairly new to Manual mode and don't want to spend the $$$ on something I can't use. As I mentioned already, I have the kit lens. I am fascinated by efects of the larger aperture.
Thanks for the focus motor info.......

With either a D lens or a G lens, you can adjust aperture by turning a dial on the camera body. This works in Manual or Aperture Priority.

Although it is a little more expensive and an older model I use the Nikkor 50mm f1.4D under some really bad indoor lighting conditions for High School Basket Ball and it has worked just fine.

I just bought the G & it doesn't appear to have VR. The switch on the lens goes from
M/A to M but tHeres no switch for VR like on my kit lenses. And, NO, of course I didn't read the manual...yet!

I bought mine new at B&H, for $216, but only because the refurbished one from Nikon wasn't in stock.
