It's sharp, good color and well composed. I think you nailed it.

Tramsey, you've shot this flower beautifully. Nice focus, soft contrasting background. I just wish a little more of the background was included.

I think it's delicate and lovely, but a bit dark. I made a quick edit in PSE12 using auto fix for brightness/contrast and removed a couple of small spots. I auto sharpened, too. Posting just for your opinion to see if you like it slightly brighter..

What I was trying to do was to have a black background and at the same time keep the subject in focus. Maybe too black?

I like your edit. Do you have any idea how to do that w/o p/p?

I know of no other way to do it. Do you not have any software for post processing? Almost any free photo editing software would be able to do the simple adjustments that I made. In the meantime, please download the one I posted so you have it for your files.

Hey, thanks very much, I will do that. When I took that shot and put it put on my computer, I thought to myself, 'HA Ntl. Geo. eat your heart out you're not getting this one.' I'll post it and see what happens. What an idiot. By now you would think that I would know that there is always, always room for improvement. I guess Ntl. Geo. is going to have to wait a little longer LOL.

Thanks again. Oh I have Elements 5 and of course Gimp

Tramsey, very well done. For experimentation purposes only, I wonder what the result in DoF would be if you could have stopped down all the way to f/8.

It's a beautiful photo and I'm sure you have many more. You can do these kinds of little adjustments easily with those programs! I check most of my shots to make sure brightness/contrast are spot on. Sometimes it's surprising what one or two corrective clicks will do.

Tramsey, NG is NOT the be all and end all of photographs. I have read many ex-NG photographers who were unhappy with the way NG cropped or edited their photos. If NG has to wait, it will be until you and a lot of other photographers around here get ready to call THEM. I would love to see that flower on a page in NG, a single page though, full spreads never impress me!

Hi, Tramsey,
I like H.Tomato's version. Having lived a bit (11 + years)in Texas I fell inlove with the incredibly delicate and translucent soft beauty of those Opuntia cactus blossums! I feel the blossum is slightly underexposed, but appreciate your desire to darken the BG. Maybe time for some masking?

If there are background areas that remain too light for your objectives in a flower photo, you can usually darken them in PP with a little cloning and/or healing brush work.

I'm with H.T. I think her edit brings this flower more to life, gives a greater feeling of depth.
