I don't do birds a lot but this girl was hanging out and I just had to take her picture. I used a Nikon 70-300 zoom at 200mm and F8 attached to my Fuji XPro-1 on this overcast day. Cropped and edited in LR.

Perfect focus, perfect exposure, beautiful background bokeh. Some parts of the background blend in a little with the bird, but it's a nature shot and that makes it even more realistic.

Very nice.

OK, I have to ask. How do you know it is she?

 Well actually, an adult male pileated woodpecker has a red stripe across his cheek. So this is a female.

This is a nice photo with an interesting subject, good exposure and acceptable sharpness. 8-)

I enjoyed the first answer more but accept that yours is the right one. Thanks.

You have to say what you think is beautiful about it. What do you like about this photo?

You can't just say very nice. You have to say why you think that. :-D

Oh My!
After many years trying to make even just an acceptable image of a piliated I've never come close to this. I do so envy you this image!

the diagonal is almost overpowering and I could wish for not such a tight crop...but I'd take this one in a heartbeat!

Good on y', Bushpilot!

A great shot of a hard bird to get. Good composition, focus, color and nice and sharp. Can't really find anything to criticize about it. Congratulations.

Thanks all for your comments and suggestions.
Bmac is right about the red streaks on the side of the face, also the males head is red front to back, not just in back like this female.

I think it is a wonderful photo becase I have never gotten one better. But the weakness of the photo is that the focus is on the side feathers and not the eye. Eye focused shots are much more compelling.
I frequently get buck fever when photographing a beauty like a pileated and forget to focus on the eye. But when I take my time and focus on the eye (using only the center focal point) and then recompose I am much more pleased with the image.
Here is one where virtually only the eyes are in focus but it is a good photo (after I got rid of the red leaf).
