Focus on the eyes is the mantra.

An absolutely stunning portrait. One can feel the subject's character coming through in this image.
Love it! My eyes go right to those eyes. I really like the unusual angle of his head, the negative space to the right and of course the flawless post processing.
I thought more catch light in the eyes would be needed. I tried it. It added nothing to the image, as a matter of fact, it detracted. Maybe a tiny bit more contrast, maybe not. It is a great image and needs little or no additional processing!

It appears a little darker in a browser than it does in my software, the eyes were brighter, I know that happens and I try to compensate for it. But perhaps different browsers display it differently, in fact I know they do. I'm wasting my time trying to compensate aren't I :-)

Damn, that's good!
...but he's not a guitar player...he's the guy I met in the light heavyweight semi-finals in college in '59. At this moment he is putting his all into the right cross that, saddly...but providentially...ended my short ring career.
Yeah...those were the eyes and at that moment - before the blow even landed - he knew he'd won...and I, exhauseted, knew it too,
jeez...what a time trip !

The expression you have caught here is priceless, Graham. I like that you left him some space in the photo. I can't say why, but it wouldn't have been as good if you had filled up the frame with his face. I am hoping someone will say why.

I really recall no pain, just my foe's precise focus on perfectly executing his plan...which you captured perfectly! and that your subjects mental focus may have been on perfect execution of a chord change to an augmented 7th chord while engaging the audience is immaterial. To my eye it's one of your most powerful images! Thanks for showing it.

You did it again. Nothing but compliments to add to this work!
Here is my Analysis, Graham... don't ever take my photo. These are so darn sharp I can see ear hair, a contact in the left eye and skin pores. I would not be able to stand up to the scrutiny.
but I do love how you capture personality so maybe we can discuss.

My Canon refers to the rear screen as "live view."
It's what came to mind when I saw this image!
It is so 'real.'

A great image Graham, very well done. Hard to get past the eyes.

I was so taken with this portrait that I had to log in so I could leave you a comment. This is the kind of 'a second in time' image that I try to capture in the portraits that I do, and it's so incredably difficult, however you manage to do it time after time, perfect exposure, perfect pp, prefect crop and the perfect subject to tell in interesting story without using a single word.
If it was just the occasional 'lucky' shot that you post, I would think that you were just an incredably hard working mere mortal like the rest of us, but your images all seem to have that certain something, that something that comes from somewhere that the rest of us are trying to find, and you seem to bathe in it.
Oh, I get it, you are really Dorian Gray, you are really several hundred years old, you have been shooting portraits for several hundred years, and the ones you post are really the best of the best, that's why they're all b&w, and . . . . oh my, they're all so exceptionally good, I learn so much from them from just looking, and I'm reminded that I'm the lucky one that gets to enjoy looking at the fruits of your talent and your amazing generosity in posting your portraits here.
I look forward to the day that I can actually post a suggestion for improvement in one of your shots. I have a lot to learn before I sleep, and the forest is very dark and deep . . . or something like that.
