Data Storage Device Question

Going on a 30 day trip, About 12 days in Dubai followed by a 17 day African Safari.
Prefer not to haul along the computer and hard drive but want suggestions regarding a self contained stand alone storage device. Electricity for charging should be available but limited. Planning on an average of 150 to 250 shots per day at about 20 mega pixel each.
Any recommendations will be warmly appreciated.

Get a few good memory chips and a small laptop like a netbook, with a WD USB portable hdd. The best of both worlds. You can edit as you go and they take up little space. Plus should you have a problem you can get support just about anywhere.

This option appears to be much more palatable. Thanks for your taking the time to answer my question.

I think this is the option I would take, possibly skip the HD and take extra cards, if you get internet you could upload to google plus and or skydrive from the laptop.
Bob.

Epson used to have a neat gizmo called a P2000 that has a 40 GB hard drive and a large LCD screen. It read SD and CF cards. Higher models were also created that had higher capacities. But as the capacity went up so did the price, astronomically. I think they are still around if you can afford them.

I have a P2000 that I've used for years and it's really handy for storing images on a trip.

But today the least expensive solution for storing images is a small computer, the things they call netbooks. These machines have a relatively large hard drive on them and can easily be used to download everything you do. They have the added benefit of allowing you to check email when you're travelling.

On a day to day basis I HATE these machines, they are painfully slow in terms of performance, and the keyboard seems to be designed for mice not human fingers. But if you're just interested in storing your images, they're perfect. I hope this offers you a possible solution.

Look in SEARCH using "Self contained storage" or "Portable Storage for travel"

Do you really think that you will only shoot 150-250 per day? I usually shoot 600/day. I am going to the Galapagos next year and plan to take a bunch of 32GB cards and my netbook computer. It only has a 11.4" screen and 340GB hard drive but I have a copy of LR4 on it so I can do some editing and perhaps a slide show while I am on the Yacht waiting for the next hike on the islands.
