Hunting Beach State Park beach. I was vey excited when I caught this image from the corner of my eye. I lowerd the camera down to 2 inches from the sand to get this intersting shot. The shadow cast is from the tree behind me.

Rudolph...I love this picture. I am so glad you saw it. The shadow from unseen tree is what makes this shot. I don't know that I would change a thing although at first glance I wondered if the horizon was even. I am on my iPad so can't check out the finer detail.

Beautiful image. I would take out some of the shadow across the bottom, the area that appears as a band. That would make it almost perfect!

I agree and may crop in from the right if needed to format the frame.

I feel by removing the lower shadow band, the image loses a certain primal feeling.

Ok, Rudolf, now you have me interested. :) I really like it when, in forums like this, the OP was intentionally trying to affect an emotional response in the viewer. What are you meaning by "primal"? and how is the band shadow contributing to that. I am just curious, not judgemental about this. Each version does have its own feel.

By the way, I do like the image and everything about it.

Thanks

I agree. The shadow in the foreground emulates the tree that is pictured. I first caught myself thinking, "How in the world did that tree trunk shadow not come out"! Then reasoning came on and I read other posts explaining it. Without the shadow, the picture would be mundane.. and lose some of the balance that the water creates behind the tree.

"Primal" is our core, it something all us that exists have in common. It is the beginning, the untouched, the primordial within us all. It is heavy and it always has at least one foot on the ground. The gravity that anchors us all. Without the band, I feel the image just floats, nothing more than viewed from an ordinary window. With the bottom band, I feel like being part of the environment, or being no different than the crab that scours the sand looking in the same direction.

What a great image. I like both versions. Have you tried one with the black band made smaller but not eliminated? I think the shadow band might be competing with the band of ocean water which for sure you don't want to lose.
