D600 Focus Question

I cannot seem to find, neither in the manual, nor in the Darell Young Nikonian book, how to set for center focus. I've tried moving the selected focus point with the multi-selector, but it doesn't do anything. Sometimes i think having multiple focus points is more of a nuisance than a help. It seems when I want to focus on something dead center, the chosen focus point is off to the side or under/over. Any D600 folks out there?

The little lever on the left side that only has two setting has a button in the middle, as your looking through your view finder push that button in until you get a single setting. Please visit u-tube for a great focus video on focus and the setting made simple.

I don't know about Nikon but in my Canon dslr cameras you have to be out of full auto in order to use focus point settings.
In my case I use "P" (program) most of the time.

Not sure the D600 is the same but three things on the D800 are suspect.

First the autofocus switch has to be in the auto position.

Then the focus mode needs to be set to AF-S to use one focus point.

And lastly the D800 requires you to rotate the focus point lock to the off position. This one has caught me several times. If you can't move the point with the multi-selector this may be the culprit. Pressing the center of the multi-selector should move the focus point to the center.

Your lens can only focus on one plane so I see no reason to mess around with some calculations by the camera as to somewhere between 9 or 21 potential points to focus on.
