Although the lines can get blurry lets remember that this is the critique board.
The post processing board is in a different place.

We don't need self-appointed thread monitors. If a post doesn't interest you ignore it.

Discussing what can be done with post processing to improve an image is part of this thread.

In lieu of that you can blur the background with post processing. I masked out the cat and kept the sharp/properly exposed one on top so then can go back and do anything to the underlying layer. I darkened it but instead could have applied a Gaussian blur...which gives a result similar to a shallow depth of field.

Since the image is cropped, I would like to see the cat more to the right and a slight more of his necklace emblem. Removing the face and shirt etcÂ… would enhance this shot and as MtnMan suggested a gaussian blur might look great. I did notice the cat seems to have dandruff or something when viewed larger.

Attached is the original photo. Yes, he has a bit of dandruff. He wasn't prepared for a show, he was prepared for taking blood at the vet's. We were dealing with a squirming animal. He knows when we're taking him to the vet, and he does not like it. He's always getting stuck with needles or having his temperature taken in the most undignified manner.

People, can we keep it civil and talk about photos here? Save the brawling for General Chit-Chat, which I find more and more resembles "professional" wrestling.

Now I also know what the thing was to the right of his shoulder. It needs to go as it does not do the capture any good. The ladies expression is caring and concerned but also displaying understanding and love of the cat. I'm not sure how I would decide on this picture. Both the cat and the lady add another dimension to the capture.

Well, here's another shot I took (original plus some sharpening, I think there was a bit of camera movement). It paints a different picture.

That's what I saw in her expression. The interaction of the two make this shot!

This is the shot, RMM. The expression on her face tells the story. I think it's okay that part of her is cropped. The angle you have on it is perfect. This is it.

It is better but the slice through the eye is bothersome.

The composition would have been better to consider what is in the frame. Putting the cat head at the lower right thirds point and capturing at least the full face of the human would make a more pleasing composition, IMHO. The stuff to the right of the cat head is of no interest and we are losing part of the very nice interesting and interested face.

You're right, but bear in mind, this wasn't portraiture, this was "Let's see if we can get a good shot of the squirming cat." :)
