I love the expression on this man's face.
The little girl is in the perfect spot.
I love that his face has bright highlights. It tells the story of a man that spends lots of time in the sun.
I like the setting for the photo. The man and his daughter are nicely framed.

Really like this one Graham.

I'm sure you could Dave, you could also do it with a D700 which is what I used for this :-)

This is a very nice image. My eye was first drawn to the man's face and only after a moment did I see the child peeking out. It was very cool to discover the child after first seeing other elements of the photo.

Thanks, that's just the way I hoped it would work.

The trouble with this is that we are supposed to be critiquing, and it's difficult when there is nothing to critique, at least in the critical sense. I've looked at it for full five minutes, can find nothing wrong with it, but the best thing I can say about what's right with it is what I said aloud when I first saw it: Walker Evans!

Another wonderful and rather timeless image. It reminds me of the subject matter of some of the old WPA photos, but captured with all the skill and intricacy associated with modern equipment and a talented photographer. The contrast between the rather husky and weathered young man in bright sun and the tiny partly shaded face of the child provides a lot to consider. Like the toning too, it fits the photograph so well.

It would be helpful for you to leave a technical or artistic description of what is right with the photo so that others may learn from it.

Just Google Walker Evans, open the images, and look, and look, and look, and study. Walker Evans was one of the Farm Service Administration Giants of Photography. You can find his Wikipedia bio here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walker_Evans

Graham's picture instantly put me in mind of Walker Evans (and many of the other FSA photographers of the Great Depression), and I believe it is well for people to study the works of the Giants to try to understand why they are Giants.

I can't get over the focus and clarity. I do wish the daughter was a bigger part of the picture. She seems just and after thought there behind her dad, but maybe that is what you are trying to convey. He is hard at work and she is there in the background just playing and waiting for him to be done.

She is the best part of the image, her shyness, being protected by Dad, a little hidden secret in the picture. There are only two families living all year round on Ulva. This chap, his brother and their mother and father, the father runs the little ferry. The other family runs the seafood restaurant.

Henri C-B would, indeed, appreciate seeing his quote beneath this image.

Sometime, Graham, just in the interest of fairness and basic human decency and humility, please ... show us a stinker!

So Dave, just for instructional purposes, would you mind taking the photo apart and describing the elements that Graham got so right? PC&C is all about learning.

I agree with everyone, this is a great shot. Love the B&W. Excellent sharpness and composition with the expression on the girl. I would have cropped out the left side and straightened the wooden beam. But, that's more of a personal taste.
