Knowing that these cameras are somewhat older technology, going from a Nikon D70 which would be a better choice? The Nikon D700, D300S or D2X. Thank you.

I upgraded from a D70s to a D300 to a D3 to a D3s. The D300 was and still is a great camera. The D3 (got used from KEH.com) was good but the D3s is sensational. I suggest you bite the bullet and explore a used D3s with KEH.com or other used vendors. This camera offers tack sharp resolution at ISO 3200 and higher. In the long run you will save money.

My ultimate camera would be the D3X but my wife would kill me in my sleep.

I would not choose the D3x. The D3s offers so much more. Have you considered divorce?

Of the three models the D700 would be the choice I would make (it's a D3 in a non pro body) but as an FX you would need to consider lenses.
The D2X is a bit old now.
I would totally agree with other posts recommending the D3S; a really good DSLR which still holds it's own on merit.

First you have to consider whether you want to stick with DX (which your D70 is). Are your lenses DX now? The D300 is the only body you mentioned that is DX. I replaced my D70s with the D300 and never regretted it.

You re the only that can decide what you want. What do you think you need in a new camera? What kind of a photographer are you and what do you want to do that you can not do now.

Excellent point there. Unless your current camera simply can't do what you wish to do, it's often better to put the money into a new lens or flash or whatever. I still use my D3000, D5000 and D200. Yep, they're a few years old but they still do the job. I find the thing I need to upgrade most is me :)

D700, the others are too far behind in technological terms
